Nice Nath. I think that's overfueling a little looking at the black smoke out the zorst pipe. HaHa. Noise don't really bother me with my diesel. Not at all. Not quite on par with my turbo'd flat four weekend toy, but I can cope with the tractor noise for the mpg difference!
The noise of my so called tractor engine fr is really fairly marginal.Very quiet for a diesel really so well happy getting 40+ mpg.Petrol equivalent would be 30 at best I imagine.
Yeah its much quicker but the increased torque of the 170 diesel makes for a buzz anyway and as I say the mpg plays into my hands too.
it will always be like this, whoever own petrol will say petrol is better, whoever owns diesel will say diesel is better...
truth is and i say it again, if costs are not an issue than diesel simply cannot compete with turbocharged petrol which
- is quicker
- sounds better
- revs higher
- doesn't smoke black when you're taking off
If you do care about mpg then yes, diesel is a good alternative (although PD170 in particular seems to be not the best VW engine ever designed...)
I've just went from TDI (PD130) to TFSI and there simply is no comparison between the sheer enjoyment of driving...

I used to have a mk4 ibiza FR petrol and I could get low 40's mpg from that on a run. some on here can only just get mid 40's on a run in a pd170
On the plus side of the diesels though, it seems to me that the petrol turbo engines seem to need some mods to get some turbo noises and whistles where as the stock tdi's seem to get some woosh.
I had a modded and drilled air box on my 20vt and to me it made the same sort of turbo noises as a stock leon 170 that I test drove, yes it did sound a bit clattery at the lights with the windows down but you have climate for keeping cool.
Both engines are flawed and neither are cheap to run (DPF) and (fuel pump)
Has anyone ever had a drag on a strip with one of each in stock form?

Why the hell do people say just get the cupra like it's nothing n aint much more,well if 3k isnt much then you must have money to burn, the made the fr so people who couldn't quite get a cupra could still have a laugh, does my head in how people slate the fr tfsi

If your not doing much miles and you have the money i'd get a cupra but if you cant afford a cupra...FR TFSI but all depends on how new you want your car, how many miles and extras. And your price limit. If i had a choice over petrol and diesels....Petrol will win every time without a doubt
Petrol all day long if you can afford it, as i cant justify spending vast amounts on fuel any longer i bought a diesel . Was a real wrench for me leaving behind my fun but thirsty Focus ST3 and buying the derv FR and for the 1st few months hated the way the derv delivers its power but have now adjusted my driving style and for now the derv suits me just fine. You will never have as much fun in any derv but as a day to day tool and with fuels prices at the same level (very high and getting worse) diesels are worth a look into imo.

Yeah a fr170, smoked loads, quicker than I thought it would be, think it was mapped, but still no match to my std cupra.
A mapped fr tfsi is quicker than a std cupra though. But then a mapped cupra will leave a mapped fr tfsi for dead
On the subject of the diesel noise, I thought the 170 pd sounded like a pig snorting when you blipped it in neutral
The diesel is pretty quiet at 80 in 5th or you can change into 6th and be even lazier... quieter than the petrol im guessing...
Anyway you just need to drive them both and see what you prefer really, even doing 8k a year you will save a fair amount of £ and have just as much fun...
