Yeah it does, from what I'm told the ECU will log faults a few times before chucking a CEL. That's why so many of the Derby lot have these intermittent faults, it might only have happened once (not enough to light the CEL) but the ECU will log it anyway until a VAG dealer/VAGCOM reads and clears the fault log.

Fantastic! Don't supose you fancy popping round for a cuppa and a *cough* VAGCOM session next time you're in my area do you? ;)

l never know my luck...it might actually help shed some light on the whole situation!

Is the car cold when this is happening as thats when its more likely and expected to do it. If you get it super hot and then give it ago and you get it then your in trouble.

Might also be an idea to check for oil leaks because if you get one and then it leaks on to a hot surface such as an exhaust it'll burn and smoke.

Any ideas anyone???

Looks like a carbon canister to me and yes they do tick. What they do is store fuel vapours etc and throw them back through the sytem to burn later so i'm told

l've not rev'd it hard when the engines cold but yes, it happens when the engines warm! :(

I can do, no problems. Trouble is, probably won't be till around Monday, the girlfriend's on her way round here from work so would probably kill me if I went out tonight, and it's my weekend with the littlun this weekend. Alternatively, if the garage reckon it's still OK to drive if you take it easy you can pop round here (Sandiacre, just off J25 of the M1)?

There's no rush to get it looked at mate because l'm not here all weekend and l've got the other halfs Polo to drive around in until it gets sorted. Just gota figure out what the hells wrong so l can start the work!

As i said before if theres no excsess oil in the intake system i wouldent worry, its not the turbo, i was told its normal for mild oily deposits, mine is caked in it lol. And yes carbon cansiters do tick its normal. Have you actually got the readings off the emissons test? If its oil being burnt then the HC (hydrocarbons) will be quite high. When was it last serviced? have you whipped the plugs out to see what there like?

The Polo eh, lucky you ;)

I'll give you a text on Monday sometime and pop round Monday night? Might as well do the Polo at the same time too if it's around, I never did scan that again to see if any of those faults came back.

Hey...the Polo is a beast! A wolf in sheeps clothing you might say! l might come to the meet next week in it instead of the LCR and see how much abuse l get!

Monday would be great mate! l'll sort you a drink out for your troubles! ;)

Thats just it though buddy, if its not that.....what the hell is it!? l'm getting white smoke, l'm getting blue smoke! l've got oil in the pipe work, l've got water in the tail pipe! Performance is certainly down and l'm sure as hell burning oil! l just don't seem to be geting any symptoms that point to one clear problem!

The MOT station told me it was a bit of a struggle to get it past the emissons test, but they managed it none the less. The HC reading came in at 24ppm (what ever that is!?)
l've not had the plugs out yet. l'm guna check them when l do a compression test, just as soon as l've found my tester.

l serviced it about 3k ago, but didn't change the plugs because they seemed fine at the time...

24PPM doesnt sound hight at all, ive seen much, much higher. PPM stands for particles per million. Water in the tail pipe means nothing if it does short journeys then its going to happen.

Yeah, that makes sense. lt says the limit is 200ppm, so l thought 24 was really good! With that reading being so low, what else do you think it coule be?

without seeing the car and looking i cant say, aslong as there is no major oil build up in the charge system, the coolant level is fine, the plugs seem ok, and there is no major oil loss i really wouldent worry about it mate, some cars do have a struggle to get through the emissions test but it doesnt mean that its ****ed beyond repair. If its boosting proper and not filling the street with smoke then i cant see any problems really.

Hummmmm......so far l've only removed the TIP because it was the easiest to do at the time and there was some oil in there but not massive amounts. The coolant level hasn't changed what so ever but it does seem to burn oil quite a bit. l tend to put a litre in every 3 months or so but l thought that was common for a turbo'd car? As for the plugs, l'll check them at some point during the weekend to see what condition they're in. As for the boost, that appears to be fine but the car doesn't seem as powerful as it did but no, it doesn't fill the streets with smoke.

Hummmm.....l guess you're right Rob. l know l'm going on about every little detail and coming across a little over the top with the questions etc but this is how all my issues started with the Rallye and before you know it, BOOM....l'm £1,000's out of pocket yet again! l just can't be doing with the same situation all over again! :(

Not sure where abouts you're based mate.. I know a no bullsh!t garage near Alfreton that'll look over it if you tell em I sent you and it'll not cost you more than a couple of beers for their time. They'll help diagnose, and are reasonable as well as being damn good..

A 'bullsh!t' garage!? That doesn't sound good!

Pretty much! Like I say, they're pretty reasonable anyway, but I'm there all the time, so if they know you've been recomended, it'll make it a bit easier.

Let me know if you're stuck for a plan, there's been loads of advice on here already, and I don't want to advertise all over the place on here. Not my garage (I work in IT for E.ON!), nothing to do with me, they're just good, but being that I've a low post count, don't want it to look like I'm advertising!!! Just let me now if you're stuck.

Yes it is normal for turbo engines to drink a little oil, my clio used to use a bit and that was a 55plate at 24k and non turbo. Best hose to take off is the lower intercooler hose as thats where the oil will gather, also check the charge pipe. As said mate, if its had a diagnostic check and no problems, no lights, coolant fine, running ok and not using excess oil its fine, has the cambelt been done? More than likely the garage is trying to get money out of you. id check if mine has a bit of blue smoke but i cant as its in 10000000 pieces.
