I had a new steering rack put on last week (not by Seat) and after getting the car back, my power steering fault light is illuminated on the dash.

After getting the new rack, i still get very heavy steering at random times at low speeds, when i'm parking mostly, and the garage that did the work told me its beacuse this fault light is on the power steering will cut on from time to time, untill I get the fault removed using VagCom I'm guessing.

I'm trying to find out:

How much Seat will charge to reset the fault light, or is there any other way of doing it that will save me some money? The steering rack cost me £550 and was totally random and unexpected!

Also, is the power steering cutting out because of the fault light, or is this rubbish?? Will resetting the light fix the power steering?

Thanks for any replies!

Take it back to wherever you got it fitted and get them to sort it.

It could be unrelated to the steering rack though - perhaps the pump? WHy did you have the rack replaced in the first place?

Well my power steering completely went randomly one day, and a lot of power steering was leaking out, i was topping it up a litre a day! Took it to seat garage, (MK SEAT) and there so crap they never returned the call for the quote, so took it to my local garage, and they told me it needs a new rack!

So got it done, and then they told me they couldnt reset the fault, because there system doesnt allow it. I assumed it was because they don't have VAGCOM.

ANy ideas anyone?! Getting annoyed with it all now!

Sounds like you need to find someone local with vag-com, to read the codes off and clear them.
Or if you have a laptop, buy yourself a copy & a cable, worth every penny IMHO.

mine likes to come on every now and again, When I turn car off and start again its gone, sure it just likes to show me its there lol

sounds more like the steering angle sensor to me which is based at the bottom of the coloumn outside of the car. These are quite common to go not themselves been faulty but by water ingress causing them to go faulty.sometimes you can get away with cleaning the sensor and cleaning out the water then resealing them with a silicone sealant.
another thing could be that it hasnt been run lock to lock to initialize the system.
if it is more than that then yo have no alternative but to take it to a dealer,
either seat or skoda as the system which is either TRW ot TOYO came from the fabia...
