filled the leon up today with super unleaded :D cost 52 pound the dealer was tight enough ohh sorry kind enough to put 15 pound in for me haha :)

i have also set up fuelly :D

Yes i'm not joking. I have driven 15 miles mixed roads and the oil was still not up to temp. At a constant 60/70 it takes about 10 miles from stone cold. Once the oil is up to 90-100 it will do 80mpg at a constant 60mph though.

I had this issue with my CR170 mk2 - which is why I went for the 1.8 simply due to the mileage and the fact engine never got warm before I arrived at work. Was at 1st stage DPF regens at least once a week.

The TSI is unbelievably fast at warming up even at zero outside temps. It's really surprised me. I can't see me going back to the black stuff anytime soon.

The quick warm-up on the 1.8 is thanks to a water-jacket around the turbo. The turbo is constantly cooled, and the coolant warms up quicker - win/win :D

I'll be filling up for the third time this week, 850-900 miles and ~300 to this tank. All thanks to a very slow 14 mile round rush-hour commute which will sometimes yield as low as 20mpg for a trip. When out and about if taking it easy around town I'll see 37mpg. Not having about, 31-33mpg.

Motorway I'm not 100% sure yet - I did one ~30 mile round trip and it returned ~40-42mpg.

I haven't got a fuelly for my new Leon yet, had one for my old TDI but kept forgetting to update it - I did have my own spreadsheet though which I'll be re-using once I get around to it.

I've had my 1.8 TSI (manual) for nearly 5 months now and have almost done 4,000 miles. Fuel consumption does seem to be improving during the last few weeks although I have for the last month been consistently using Shell V Power Nitro+ so that may have made a slight difference.

My previous car was a Leon FR TDI 170 CR and at first I thought I'd made a mistake changing to the 1.8 TSI because I was only averaging around 35 mpg. However I am now regularly getting over 40 mpg and that is driving fairly normally, without trying to save fuel. On a motorway journey, distance about 100 miles, with cruise control set at 70 I am getting 44 mpg. Today I did a journey of approximately 25 miles on a fairly winding main road where the speed limit was 50 and I averaged at 46 mpg. I think this is really good for a 1.8 petrol engine and is not that much lower than I was getting in my previous TDI 170 CR.

I'm also noticing that on my daily short 2 mile journey into work with a 30 mph limit and lots of stops and starts I'm getting figures averaging around 30 mpg which is higher than I ever got in my TDI for that journey.

Therefore on my relatively low mileage of never more than 12,000 a year, with the sort of journeys I do, I'm not going to be much worse off for changing from the TDI to the 1.8 TSI. I think I might try a few weeks of running my car on standard unleaded and see how that compares. If I don't notice much difference, with the current price of standard unleaded being 130p a litre I could actually be better off!

I'm finding the 1.8 TSI a great car to drive and like it much better than the TDI. The acceleration in lower gears and at lower speeds around town is fantastic. At all speeds it seems much more responsive and smoother to drive. It's great to drive on hilly, winding country roads and was fantastic during a holiday in Scotland this summer. I understand about missing the torque but that's not been a problem. The new Mk3 184 TDI would have to be really good to make me change back to diesel after experiencing the 1.8 petrol.

Don't want to alarm you but are those figures from the dash display or calculated.

On my 1.4 TSi the dash display is a liar. It consistently reads about 8% higher than the true calculated figure. On my last fill the dash said 49.9 mpg, using miles and fuel used it is 46 mpg. This has been consistent during my 5 months of ownership during which it has averaged 45.5 mpg and the dash says 49.7 long term.

Still excellent for a petrol especially when you take into account the 7 pence a litre price difference. That raises the 45.5 mpg to 48 mpg which is identical to the figure I got form my previous car, a BMW 118d which had exactly the same power but was actually no where near as quick as the Leon. The dash display was a liar on the BMW as well by a similar percentage.

My figures are from the dash display but I am not at all alarmed because I am aware that they are not correct. However, the figures I am comparing with, my previous TDI 170 CR were also from the dash display!

I know that the figures from the dash display are a little over optimistic but they are still much better than ever I expected from a 1.8 petrol engine.

Does the Leon have a litres or gallons per hour indication when stopped with the engine at idle. I'm interested in how much fuel the 1.4 TSI engine will use when idling and whether automatic stop start would make a real difference.

I've not seen a readout for idle as it has start stop. The 'comfort consumers' indicator goes up to litre an hour and with heated mirrors, seats, rear screen, fogs and aircon max it uses about a tenth of the guage when it's cold outside.

No sorry a tenth of the comfort consumers guage. I just switched it all on and it is actually more like 1/4 of the gauge when it is not sub zero:

Works great for me. If nobody crashes I don't need it on my commute, if they do it doubles my economy. Just had to adapt my driving style in jams to wait until there is about 10 car lengths before creeping forward.

Mine has a key.

I waited in a traffic jam down hill for 20 mins when I had the courtesy Corsa. The engine stayed off the whole way down the hill, even though the engine was off, still maintained steering and brakes the whole way. My current car without stop start loses it's steering as soon as the engine is off and the brakes follow after several uses. Just left the Corsa in neutral, took the hand brake off and coasted, the engine would kick in of coasting above 3 mph.

Ignoring official MPG figures, in my experience of driving various cars so far I have noticed that two identical cars but one with a petrol and the other with the nearest equivalent on power diesel will normally show 5 mpg more for the diesel in the same driving conditions. When you factor in the prices difference at the pumps the diesel loses 2 mpg from its advantage.

Am I the only one that experiences this? It's one of the main reasons I am going back to petrol. I haven't driven the 150 tdi but if the 1.4 TSI achieved 45 mpg I reckon the 150 tdi would only get 50 mpg in the same driving conditions.

I must also point out that over 80% of my driving is slow and in town and maybe diesel really suffers for economy in these conditions. I am yet to do the comparison on mainly motorway driving. Anyone had similar experiences?

I think you're right for town driving. Especially if it's a short journey. My 184 takes a good 10 motorway miles to heat up fully. As soon as you get on a run you are looking at 20mpg +

I get 65mpg on my motorway commute. Id be surprised if the 1.8tsi got 45mpg as the 2.0tsi golf I used to use was mid to high 30s.
