Hi

I have been looking for a Leon for a few weeks now, I was warned off a FR TDI CR 2.0 by the good members of this forum, I do a fair bit of round town, short trips, I have driven a 1.4 tsi which was a nice drive bit a bit plastic and basic (set trim).

Today I found a a 56 plate 2L FR tfsi , 52k FSH, dealership are happy to do the cam belt, service, mot, and replace 2 tyres, seems like a great deal..

My current car is a 1.8 petrol, I am averaging 30 mpg ish, that's doing around 20 miles a week of city centre driving and a 50 mile round trip on the motorway.

What can I expect. To get back out of the Tfsi real world ?

Any quirks or thing to look for or be wary of with this particular car? Thanks

Diverter valves fail. On the KO3 they are located under the car near the turbo and are a PITA to replace. The PCV valve is another issue that is common. Make sure the cam follower has been replaced also. The tfsi block being a direct injection engine by nature will suffer with coked inlet valves which over time/mileage will cause rough idling and rough idle. The block itself is very very strong a DV will cost you £30 and a PCV will be around the same once replaced should last the standard car its life time of use

Tfsi have more problems or same amount as a cr' CR EGR or DPF with ID be mapping out, TFSI DV PCV system' Boost leaks and what ever else, don't know why you where warned off' it's a personal preference choice

Doesn't sound like you cover enough miles to really benefit from the diesel. You can expect at least the same economy from the FR TFSI as what you're getting now from your 1.8 (with sensible driving)

There are time when I ring the **** out of my Toyota, there are some serious flat spots ... The fr had bags of power, If I drove it sensibly I wouldn't have to rag it the same way I do my poor old Toyota, I have had such good reliability from it a am just a little wary of a bigger tuned engine meaning more reliability issues

The TFSI block in the FR is god for 350 bhp im sure at 200 it isn't even tickled

warned off a 2.0cr?

As in mileage is not high enough to justify a diesel, not that there is anything inherently wrong with a CR TDI.

The TFSI is a good strong engine, it will have some niggles every now and again but any 9 year old car will. You'll need to keep on top of the oil as some can use a but, but regular maintenance wil see you right.

Make sure you are happy with the ride quality too, it is a very firm ride.

You will not get the economy benefits of a diesel if you do repeated short trips with long intervals between them, but don't ignore the benefit of the diesel's extra power at low revs, which is where you will be if your short journeys are town/commuting. I love being able to keep up with traffic and take any overtaking opportunities without revving the nuts off the engine...

Taxi drivers often use diesels, but they are a special case as they don't often let their engine go cold. Lots of short journeys, yes, but with an engine up to temperature.

I can go into detail about why diesels have more power than apparently better petrol engines when you are considering town speeds, but it's quicker if I point you at an old thread where I deployed a part of that lecture (post 12) :)
