Rear Disc Brakes

After my recent service I was advised that my rear discs were slightly warped. Been noticing it more now especially slowing down from 60/70mph.

Was wondering if anyone on here has changed the rear discs and pads on the MK3 leon? Is it simple enough?

Cheers

Out of interest which hand brake does that car have, cable or electric? Either way replacing the rear discs tends to just be removing the callipers from the carrier bracket and swopping the discs over, though usually I buy new carrier bolts and remove that as well.

Edit:- I was generalising there on VW Group cars with rear disc brakes, never having taken the rear discs off a Leon.

It's easy but it depends on which kind of handbrake you have. If it's a cable/manual one you need to wind the pistons back in. You need a tool for this but it's cheap on eBay.

If it's an electric handbrake you need to plug into the ecu and put the brakes into service mode or something. I don't know exactly, I haven't done it, but it's more involved than just winding the pistons back in.

Random question but about rear discs.
Are everyone's rear discs vented on the standard Cupra (no Sports pack). Says solid in the manual but they are definitely vented the same as the front on mine.

It's got a cable handbrake, I've changed fronts on other cars, I'm assuming its along the same lines.

The handbrake is a cable one, going to have a look for that tool, been quoted £300 from a garage, but i know i can get the discs and pads (Brembos) for £70 on ECP just now.

As your car has a cable parking brake set up, it must be one of the lower engine outputs versions, so if I were you, I'd think that Pagid or Textar rear pads would do the job along with new Pagid discs as the rear brakes don't really get that much work to do.

Yip. The only difference is that you need to wind the piston back in then 'seat' it again. You can buy a universal kit on eBay for about £15, works perfectly.

The removal of the spline drive bolts at 7:15 into the video are a PITA - especially if you are doing this with a jack on the driveway as opposed to a set of ramps. On my Leon and Octavia I needed to use a 2’ breaker bar. Also, the spline drives are not a standard tool, even in a 300 piece professional socket set, so make sure you have the right M14 spline drive (triple square) socket before you start.

Not too impressed with the standard rear ATE set up on the Cupra - one set of rear discs replaced under warranty for warping, and the second set are starting to vibrate on a car with only 11.5k miles.

The Brembo discs in ECP are just made to equivalent spec of OEM - I’m pretty sure that the cars with Brembo set up as standard (Sub-8, R, Carbon) still have the standard vented ATE 310 mm set-up on the rear - not seen them up close to confirm.

That is true. I used a breaker bar but still couldn't snap them free. Ended up hitting the bar with a mash hammer, that did it.

I wouldn't even think about do this kind of job on the compact car jack. I have axle stands and a three-ton trolley jack.

My Leon is a 64 plate FR 184 DSG, I think the age is why it’s got a cable handbrake.
