Am servicing the GTi today but having a few problems with removing the oil filter (which is in the most stupid place possible).
Has anyone had this problem on their abf/16v and got any top tips?
Have been lying underneath it using a pair of rubber gloves and used a rubber banded tool, but its just too tight to shift.
Help!!!

Ollie

Is the rubber banded tool not gripping it? they shouldent be on that tight, I'd get a strap wrench and enough extensions to get enough of a swing on it under the car

This is the first service I have done on it since I have had it - and it is crazy tight!!!
Its gripping but it just wont turn (my rubber strap wrench)
Its in such a aquard place im running out of ideas.
Chain wrench be any better, will have to pop out and buy one

They are a b**ch to take off. I had to take mine to my mechanic and do the oil change there.
IS it not flooded round your end?

Had another go with the strap wrench, and by basically crushing half on the filter it has turned off!!!

But has now unveiled a new problem. The whole housing that the filter goes into seems loose. The bolt up inside the housing is finger tight (I think the oil filter was screwed up tight to that (which may have been one of the reasons it was so hard to get off).

Are they equally stupid to do on the 8v??
Im at home at the moment. Its flooded most of Worcestershire.
Drove past a pub in Belbraughton and the car park had collapsed when the river next to it flooded and a fiesta ended up upside down blocking the bridge arch!!! So then the rest of the town flooded.
Im ok though, on top of a hill :D

Yeh i think they are situated in the same place as the 16v. On the 1.4 it was ok, as the filter had a massive nut on the end that you could bang a socket onto and undo.

My brother (birmingham) was saying how badly it was flooded there and that bits of Stratford road had lost power. Then the power to our street went as well. Glad i didn't go home this weekend :)

if i can never get me filter off i smack a big screwdriver through it and turn it using that, never fails.
worcesters underwater again.. mayhem on the roads!!

Iv thought about that doing that once or twice but decided against it as knowing my luck id screw up lol. Saying that im servicing next week, the screw driver might get used haha.

I've seen someone do the old screwdriver trick and end up shredding the can and being in deep poop as their car was facing down the hill of the drive blocking their other car in - ha ha

Was all sorted now. Don't think that it has had a full service since a major SEAT dealer service 2 1/2 years ago (which cost over £1k), as it had all genuine Volkswagen/Seat Parts on it.
Engine sounds much nicer now and I have peace if mind.

Was a sad day as I had to change the car back to standard after talking to direct line insurance and their stance on even having mk3 wheels on it as winter wheels.
So now wearing the white ronals and no BMC for the next year untill my policy runs out I think :(
