Retro fitting xenon projector lamps

Has anyone done it?

New mot tests state auto levelling and washers aren't required so long as they're set up ok and a good beam pattern.

Fed up of hids already and quite fancy proper oem style projectors! So has anyone looked into and the costs involved? May drop dave@ sere a line for lamp prices!

they are ridiculously expensive even before you've added bulbs and ballasts etc

Dave totted it up, would cost over £1000 to buy them new from seat, thats headlights, bulbs and ballasts.

Was trying to buy some from someone who's breaking one but he was a timewaster

I'm new to the Ibiza but I know for my old mk4 golf OEM headlights regularly went for £350 to £500 so not cheap.

So, does this now make HIDs legal provided they are set up well and have a good beam pattern?

Just wanting to confirm if so i may look into some!

Aslong as the beam pattern is correct and you buy the right bulbs (h7r not regular h7) and anything up to 6k, you shouldn't really get any attention from the police or mot tester

Your best bet is to keep trawling through ebay and wait for some to pop up. You can get lucky and get them cheap or at least cheaper.

Thanks matey that's what i thought. However, i only have the 1.2s so H4 bulbs, question i have are does anybody think they will be any good? I'm not wanting them to look like a chav driving round McDonald car park, i do a lot of night time driving, daily infact. Any increase in lighting is a plus in my view!

Reading about the new MOT changes for 2012 (Here)

It says:

Headlight requirements are updated to take account of the particular characteristics of High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps.

HID headlights can cause dazzle if they are dirty or aimed too high so car manufacturers must fit headlamp cleaning and levelling systems. A car will fail if a mandatory headlamp cleaning or levelling system is missing, doesn't work or is obviously defective.

Vehicles fitted with aftermarket HID systems must also be fitted with properly working washer and levelling systems.

If a headlamp bulb is not seated correctly the resulting beam pattern will be indistinct and this will result in a test fail.

I thought this is where we were at at the moment?

Although reading VOSAs internal new letter it doesn't say much about it, just that they need to think about it! So confusing.

I'll still be taking mine out come MOT time, still says if you have LED,Xenon or HID headlights you need headlight washers and an auto levelling system. Not worth a fail for the sake of 10 mins work.

I got the whole kit for around £150 headlamps clusters RHD, £2.04 for the pair, ebay. Pair of D1S bulbs, £80, ebay. Ballasts 2nd hand from Audi A4, $100, ebay US when exchange rate was good.

Bargain for myself, was very lucky to spot the clusters and even more lucky that nobody else bid!

I'm getting on this now, didnt realise there were parts available for it other than new from seat. So are all VAG xenon ballasts interchangeable?

I think they have to be compatible with the bulb type as different bulbs have different fitments etc. I bought all the stuff back in 2007 I think, it's been a fair while and my memory isn't great. I've had them on 2 cars now
