Saying goodbye to my Cupra R

Hi All,

Only posted here once before when I became a proud owner of my 03 Red AMK Cupra R back in 2015. Have always browsed the forums but never posted or commented since that day.

And now my Second ever post is a sad one.

As per the title due to a road accident my Cupra R is no more. Some delightful person pulled out in front a few cars ahead of me, everyone slammed on, but a pile up started and despite only doing around 25 mph in traffic and having the monster Brembo's I could not stop in time! Connected with the rear end of a Disco with what I can only describe as a harpoon for a Tow bar. Full on spear to the center of her. Due to this front end damage she is a goner. As is the dude that pulled out in front of everyone! Shocker aye...[:@]

Really shook me and my little 7 year old lad up! And even though a lowish speed collision, it did not feel it! I am just grateful that we were both OK and the people in the other 3 cars involved were all uninjured too.

I am absolutely devastated, she has been great fun to drive and a pleasure to own and work on. My little one misses the car also, I reckon I have future petrol head in him!

I brought her with only 37k on the clock, had 80k when lost. Had done a few normal mods like the following-

Forge 008
Badger 5 Tip
3" turbo back stainless exhaust
200 cell cat
Rear ARB
Refurbished and powder coated the Brembo's in black.

Always kept her well looked after, I had only just forgone the task of replacing the clutch with her on axle stands on the drive:blink:. You probably all know the joy of dropping the box out on these with out a ramp. And about a month prior did all discs and pads...... Got about 600 miles done on the new clutch and maybe few hundred more on the brakes before the fatal day! The financial joy of cars aye!

Had more things I planned to do sadly like refurbish the wheels etc while keeping her looking fairly standard externally. Love the way these cars look!

I really hope again one day to own another Cupra and post on these forums under much happier circumstances.

Picture a few days before having some TLC and then the heartbreaking damage after.

And that's my unfortunate story so far on owning what I felt is an absolute classic and beast of a car!

Anyways, I will be making a post in the for sale section soon. Due to the lovely insurance company offering next to feck all for what she is worth and then minus my excess, I would rather she went to other enthusiasts. I will either let her go complete for someone else to break or break it myself for parts depending on interest.

Keep on Cupra'ing lads and ladies

Another soul lost at a young age... poor Cupra didn’t even hit 100k... sorry you went through that mate! Glad you and the lad are okay! And hope to see you in another Cupra soon!

So sorry to see this happen but as others have said at least no one was hurt.
Just out of interest I was wandering what the insurance had offered?
I’ve been trying to get my insurance sorted for my mk1 Cupra R.
I’ve ended up sticking with my current insurer but spoke to a specialist who I thought might be able to offer an agreed valuation should the worst happen.
My car has just under 90k on the clock is completely standard and is in near enough mint condition.
It’s my fear should anything happen I’ll get offered a grand or something knowing full well it’s nearer 4/5 grand to get another then do all the jobs that I’ve had done on mine.
I was told it wasn’t considered to be old or rare enough for an agreed valuation but I’m gonna try some other companies and see what they say.
I think they’re old and rare enough but then I’m biased.

Cheers lads for all the replies

I would love to repair it but one crumple zone is damaged. I'd be able to do the rest of the repairs but that is beyond me and I don't even know if it could be fixed .

Definitely willing to break it as she is just sat there currently. So if any of you lads need parts feel free to PM me.

The insurance company offered me just over a grand, then minus the excess I'd be left with less then £800 . Really upsetting as like Nathan has said she is worth 3/4 times that amount with her mileage and condition.

Decided I would get more for her in parts which will further help fund a new Cupra .

I miss driving her so much, never been so attached to a car as I have the Cupra.

If I was you I'd keep it....buy a Cupra none R and make it an R. You have everything there ready to go in. Could buy a Cupra for under a grand. Or get a 1.6 Leon and get yourself a nice sleeper and road tax cheater lol.

That’s shocking what they’ve offered as market value. Did you politely decline their first offer?
Surely if they’d done a quick search for cars currently on the market they would have seen how much it would cost to buy a like for like replacement?
I thought that’s how they worked out what cars are worth?
Our ford S max was written off a couple of years ago. It was a 2007 titanium model with approx 115000 on the clock.
My wife spun on ice, the back end scraped a barrier and it was declared a write off even the though it was only light bumper and rear hatch damage.
Can’t remember what they offered first but I turned them down, sent them evidence of cars for sale and got £3995. Then bought another, same car, same year but with 88k for £4400 so your settlement figure seems low to me.

They ALWAYS take the mick first offer. My old classic was on a classic policy and agreed valuation of 2k as of 3 years when it vanished into thin air, the excess was 100. First offer made was 300. I rang them up and laughed, the market value had gone up and I hadn't altered the policy but I was happy with the agreed value. They sent a cheque the same day for the full 1900.

If my car gets smashed, I'd be pissed but wouldn't bother going through insurance, I'll just replace it..... come a point where someone somewhere states it's time for a new path, bigger, better, who knows.... but everything happens for a reason.
