Took it to the garage first they said it was the brake light switch and a dirty throttle body, so they cleaned the throttle body and replaced the switch, then they reset the codes... lights were back on within 10 minutes of driving.Brought it back they said it was the EGR valve so they cleaned that, lights came on again now they reckon it needs replacing and dont know what is causing the EPC light to be on... Anyone ever come across anything like this? I just dont want them to take anymore of my money lol
 
They reset the codes, so I'm assuming they've done a diagnostic on the car, or are they just stabbing in the dark and hoping to come up with a resolution. I'm assuming you've gone to a local garage rather than a dealer?

Might be work taking it to a reputable VAG garage and getting a second opinion unless you know someone with VAG-COM that may be able to guide you in the right direction.

Did they do the throttle body because of an error code? Do you know if they recalibrated it after refitting? I would have assumed the EGR error code would have been there to begin with and not only appear after cleaning the throttle body and replacing the brake light switch(common fault).

You could try cleaning it yourself. Not too sure how benificial it is on the petrol EGR valve though, but it may be blocked up with crud.
 
As far as i know they cleaned the throttle body not because of an error code, but because they reckoned that was the problem and im not sure if they recalibrated it...
 
sounds to me like they didnt really know what they were doing.
 
mine came on about a week after i drove my car down my street with the whole air box off, haha what a ******! but iv just left it for the time being its runnning fine atm, you havent done anythin daft like that have you? lol
 
No i didnt do anything like that lol, i changed out my whole fusebox with new ones to resolve a problem but then about a day later the engine light and EPC light came on, the car seems to be running fine though :confused: i need to put the car threw an NCT (same as MOT in Ireland) Its doing my head in :-(
 
My daughter has this problem after for the EGR light having a non gen lambda sensor & cat fitted. For the EPC light I've changed both brake light switches to no avail. This is going to cost her big time unless anyone on here knows where she can go from here. The Lambda sounds a simple fix but there are two on the car & we're not sure which one was fitted when she had it done.
Please help.

First buy a simple but reliable scan tool, like the VAG one from www.gendan.co.uk - it costs about £40. EGR issues, in my recent experience, are caused by the tar/gunge build up in the inlet manifold below the Throttle Body, where the crankcase fumes make contact with the recirculated exhaust gasses from the EGR.

The scan tool is essential to find out what is happening cheaply and quickly.

There does seem to be a bit of history of these 1.2 engines needing their manicats replacing, though I don't know off the top of my head, what the root cause is, oh and don't expect great results from aftermarket Lambda sensors, stick with VAG sourced ones.

I'd expect EPC problems to be related to the Throttle Body assembly or something near it - if the brake lights are working.

Tks RUM4MO. apologies I forgot to say hers is a 1.4 8valve engine. I will attempt to check that egr gunge although I did clean it out about 6mths ago. Sadly the EPC light came on the moment her clutch pedal housing collapsed.

Ah, the good old 6K Ibiza, my daughter used to have one with that engine, very noisy but never missed a beat - and it was a lot more willing feeling at lowish revs than her mother's 1.4 BBY engined Polo 9N! I kept the clutch release pivot shaft area well oiled to avoid the pedal box collapsing, and I'm glad to say that her pedal box was still intact when she traded it in 2.25 years ago (it was a 51 reg 1.4 Chill)! Originally had different sized front discs on each side!! Arnold Clarke Liverpool way, don't you just love them!
