I had the same car as you, a 2007 170 TDi FR and went to the 1.2 TSi SC. I liked it for a while but had to upsize as we had started a family and got a 5 door with the same engine. Found it absolutely gutless with 3 people onboard and the baby seat and pram in it, so switched to the 1.6 TDi Ecomotive ST ex-demo with most of the options ticked. I love it, it's got plenty of torque for the size of engine and it gets very good mileage. I definitely feel safer pulling away from junctions and roundabouts with the wee fella in the back than I did with the 1.2 petrol.

no complaints

I have a 2014 1.6 (105)ST tech pack, previously had a Focus 1.8 Tdi and the difference in acceleration is barely noticeable. Regularly do trips from the midlands to Snowdonia and with a mixture of motorway and lugging up and down the hills achieve an average of 62-68mpg. Considering the Ford Focus is supposed to be the best in it's class for road handling, I've found the Leon to have much better handling and more comfortable on distances.

Before selling my octavia vrs tfsi i road tested the golf mk7 1.6 tdi and it felt to sluggish imo so i went for the mk3 leon fr 150 tdi which picked up better and still only £20 tax if i were you drive both variants before you buy

well that's it you see, i dont really need the power for daily use, it's never got much weight in (me, the mrs & our little one whos only 18 months) and the reason i'd be getting one is for the cheaper insurance so the OH can drive it :)

My 2 cents

Here is my experience:

Back in late 2012 I drove a brand new Leon 5F 1.2TSI, and instantly feel in love with the Spanish Styling and German practicality/reliability. I had it as a hire car for 2 weeks whilst on holiday in Spain, and was honestly quite sad to give it back and return to my Renault Clio, haha

In January 2016 I gave in and bought a 63 plate second-hand Seat Leon SE 1.6TDI (105BHP/250Nm), with Tech Pack (inc. DAB, SAT NAV, LED Headlights, Fog lights, etc).
What a car, wow!

Remembering back to my initial thoughts in 2016, the main aspects that really struck me were, in order of appropriateness:

1 Chassis.
Being the only car on the road other than the Golf to use the brand new VAG MQB chassis, the car handles beautifully. It is square through corners, with almost zero body roll even when pushing the car (within limits haha :D). The ride is firm enough to feel sporty, yet soft enough to be more than comfortable.

2 Brakes.
The standard brakes (tyre dependant) are VERY good! Even the 1.6TDI gets all-round brake disk's and pads, not a drum-brake in sight. In fact, if you look up the specs, you will realise that it has the same brake setup as the 1.4TSI 150BHP, so be reassured this thing will stop, and stop quickly!

3 Engine.
The 1.6TDI is a great engine that punches well above its weight. 0-60MPH, measured by my VAGCOM/VCDS software, in my setup is 10.6 seconds (10.0 seconds dead with traction control off).

I drove the car until the 3 year warranty run out, in Sept 2016, then I got a little creative with the car:

Sept 2016.
I retrofitted both front and rear parking sensors to the car, and enabled the display on the dashboard screen to view them, all standard OEM VW parts and equipment.

Oct 2016.
I fitted a reversing camera and enabled the dashboard screen to view it.

November - December 2016.
I made several other tweaks to the cars software, via my VCDS software, enabling other bits only found on FR and CUPRA models, easy to do as the Leon is basically a Golf with a body kit.

January 2017.
I got the car Stage 1 tuned at AMD Tuning Essex, and fitted a performance ITG Oiled-Foam Air Filter.
Took the 1.6TDI from 105PS/103BPH & 250Nm to 154.1PS/152BHP & 325Nm, in effect making my road-tax free 1.6TDI Leon equivalent to standard 2.0TDI FR 150!
Average MPG only took a 5MPG hit too, still average 50MPGish between tanks (real MPG, not trip computer), and mid-late 60MPG's on the motorway runs @ 70MPH.

June 2017.
Fitted Brembo disc's and pad's, stock callipers for now.

September 2017.
In the process of retrofitting the Seat Sound System.

Summary
Yes, it’s true, you aren't going to win many drag races with a 1.6TDI (even at Stage 1), however, I certainly wouldn't call it slow either…. A 1.6TDI with Stage 1 will do 0-60MHP in 8.4seconds, the same as the 150PS FR 2.0TDI variant of the car!
The ride is lovely, the brakes are responsive and the kit level is decent (go for at least an SE though).
I thoroughly recommend the SEAT LEON 5F. Think of it like this, the way I see it:
If you want sportier, buy a Leon.
If you want a family car, buy a Octavia.
If you want a compromise of the two and plenty of extra money to burn, buy a Golf.
If you want all out performance, buy an Audi.

I have tinkered with my 1.6TDI SE extensively, so if you have any questions just ask, hopefully I can help...

Note
Also bear in mind, there is always going to be "that CUPRA guy" who isn't impressed with it.
It's a bit like asking Gordon Ramsay for his thoughts on McCain Microwave Chips, of course they won't be impressed... :p

Any news on your purchase Lewis?

FYI I am about 2 months in to having a 1.6tdi DSG with tech pack and absolutely love it!

Sold my 2011 Corsa VXR to fund it and don't regret it! I am averaging 58mpg on a 60 mile commute (about 20 miles is heavy traffic). I'd recommend you get the DSG too, it changes gear quicker than you can even think about changing and it is really nice and easy in traffic.

Love the tech pack too, the sat nav is decent and the LED lights give it a real premium look. Only thing I'm going to change are the wheels; look a little bit too small IMO.

There's a new SEAT garage in Barnsley (CARS2) next to Peugeot and Hyundai but I'd avoid them like the plague - scum of the earth CARS2 employees.

But yes, I've driven faster cars, nicer cars and much more expensive cars but by the sounds of it, the 1.6tdi (DSG) will be perfect for you, your needs and your family.

Good luck if you take the plunge!

Also just to add to this - some of colleagues have similar-ish cars; a Scirocco, Astra diesel, A3, Volvo C30 plus others, and they have all commented on my car and how much they like it.

I think the quality and spec for the money is almost unrivalled, especially at nearly new level!

Used to work over in Barnsley but live in Manchester sadly or else you could've had a look at mine.

At least you know what you want so when 'the one' does come up you'll be ready!

Keep us posted.

You are very welcome my friend!

I'm sure you already are aware but if you buy a pre-April 2017 model the 1.6TDI it will be Road-Tax free for the life of the car, regardless of owner!
If you can do without brand-new, a pre April 2017 registered Leon will save you a lot of money in the future.

Having only run mine now for 2 and a half years, the fuel and tax savings compared to my old 1.4 Petrol Clio has amounted to well over £2500 (Well over £1000 saving annually, due to fuel effieceincy and tax exemption)...

Worth bearing in mind.

well i was looking at 13/14 plates so i would drop on :) i'll be honest as well as buying it for the OH to drive as well i did bare in mind the savings on fuel and tax etc. which did sway it a lot for me and made me pursue it further, i've spotted a few i like so we'll see what happens :)

cheers Jim! do you find it comfy inside and generally a nice place to be? any pros/cons?

I bought it 1 year old in 2015 and have had no problems with it since then. I took it into the dealers once to sort a door card rattle but thats a common issue with all mk3 leons.

Very comfortable yes. I am I am 6ft 5 with very long legs and dont even need the chair all the way back which i do in most cars.

Its Great for cruising down the motorway and getting fantastic economy.

Its not going to set the world alight with 0-60 performance figures, but at the same time its no slouch in my opinion. Maybe im not the best to comment on that though as our other car is a 1 litre VW up!

ok so managed to take one out for a test drive last night :) the worries of lack of power/torque are now gone as it wasn't as bad as I first feared coming from something with double the power

lovely place to be inside as well!

just waiting for the dealer manager to ring me back and see what sort of deals he can do for me as I'm in no rush to buy anything he will need to be generous haha!
