my service indicator came on today followed almost instantly by the engine light are these two things related or is it just some spooky coincidence

spooky coincidence I would say

is it a year or 10k miles since the last service?

it is near enough a year since it had a service

You could try resetting the service indicator. If you do a search there are instructions on how to do it in other threads.

If you do try, it let us know if the engine light goes out.

well i reset the indicator last night but the engine light was still on. went out this morning and it was still on got in the car to come home and it had gone out. all the time it was on the car ran fine no hesitation or lack of power. all very strange the only possible explanation is some sort of witch craft or black magic
