ok, come for a trip with me, open the bonnet and look at the top of your turrets. you have the nut inside the inverse dome shapped bit with the rubber edge then bellow that there is a black circle of metal.

this black circle is loose on the passenger side!

is this bad?

is this normal?

i have coilovers fitted so figure this could be a result of that.

below the first nut should be the top mount..

then the spring seat which is metal, but souldnt be able to see this from the strut turret?

under the nut is the top mount bearing also.

im guessing the black circle of metal is the bearing... but again shouldnt be able to see this really.

nah its not the bearing, Theres the nut, then the metal dome bit dipping in then this sits in a large black metal ring.

Im gonna tighten the nut tbh see what happens but i need my deep reach socket :(

James, there shouldn't be anything between the metal cup that you can see. Take a look at the set up on vag cat to see what it should look like

tbh he has coilies, on mine, theres a nut over the strut top, then under that another nut which tightens onto the top mount, the bearing is under the top mount...... if its that bolt that is loose the top strut ring thing will be loose and rattling onto the strut in the engine bay.

not sure if coilies are different.

the only metal base i would have would be the spring seat but shouldnt be able to see that.

as said whip it of and refit.

someone wanna do me a massive favour and take a picture of there strut tops?

i looked at vagcat and it doesnt show this part :S.

It isnt the top mount, its not the limit stop. its weird.

that looks like the spring seat mate...... shouldnt be there tbh, who fitted them

Garge down the road from where i live , was recommended, but i have coilovers so the spring seat is in theory unused from the old set, so maybe they just whacked it in there to make up the gap?

think thats what they done, take it off mate, shoul look like the pic lee posted....

if thats not tight then it will rattle on the strut.

that shouldnt be there tbh.

ps ring them and ask why the fcuk they put that on, it will not be tight hence the rattle.

noone see any probs with it for the moment, as i said i dont have the deep reach socket to get the nut out, or if anyone can tell me where to buy one as the one i used at home was imperial not metric lol.

Size and shop please :) i got Alan Hanson Keys

no safety issues really, the strut will be sitting higher than it should be really though...

is it in the wheel bearing housing properly?

a impact gun will get that nut off, youll need a 17mm (ithink) deep spanner and a allen key to hold the strut to tighten.

use some anti sieze and the nut will come off easily.

take top nut off, take spring seat off, refit, job done no more rattles.

if you have a spark plug socket, use on of those over the nut, put the allen key through the spark plug socket and undo with a spanner on the plug socet

this will work also

they have the locking pins in the hub i know that cause when they were fitted they forgot to put the pins back in.

like i said i think ive had enough and might just buy a new spring set and stick these on ebay.

i dont think its the coilies, i think its the tards who fitted them for you

did they sset them up aswell or just bang them on

the bolt will go back in regardless if there seated properly... cant see theyd be in properly with that top mount not being on right... it sits too high at the top.

the bolt has to lock into the holes at the back though so that could be it.

im gonna try and have these bits taken off this weekend then.

the holes in the back of struts will bend out though, if they havent been seated properly or not.

ive seen a mk4 golf with the struts not fully in the houing and it sat too high, obviously if the coilies are wound down then you wont notice this.

pity you aint close, id have done this for you. sounds frustrating matey.

especially as youve entrusted in a garage
