You need to open up the split bit at the top - how did you get it out anyway - brut force?? The correct way to deal with this is to use a VAG hub wedge thing - it is a bit like a fat screwdriver blade and after removing the clamping bolt you insert the wedge, then rotate it by 90 degrees, it then is quite happy to stay in that position until you have refitted the strut correctly and are ready to refit and tighten the clamping bolt - then you rotate the wedge a further 90 degrees and remove it - and the split part of the hub closes back up. Have a search on some of these forums for pictures etc. I tried using some cheap screwdriver bits but they either broke or would not stay in place, the correct tool is available from "Laser Hand Tool" and is p/n 3396 - have a look on www.toolconnection.co.uk and order via Halfords if you really need to get one.
