Standard head unit and amp

OK, I've wired all the car up, came to take out the headunit, then see that there is no where to plug in the cables into the back of the headunit. Is this the case or do I have the wrong cables. Its the standard FR Alana MP3 headunit, and the cables I have are two 'round plugs', kinda like stereo jacks. Please help as my car is currently in pieces!

I thought it wasnt possible to hook up an external amp to standard Alana headunit because there is no outputs!?....if I am right you need to be looking for a new headunit or leave the ice...?

Apparently it is possible. There's an adapter I need to buy or something, just don't know what.

Really? God dammit lol When you find out about the adapter let me know! Will save me £260quid i was jsut about for fork out for new Alpine!

I take it you have red/white phono type input plugs for your amp

the speaker wire outputs wil put too much into an amp and prob blow it up

you can get a speaker wire to phono type adapter thing with resistors in it from maplins I think (I had one years ago and it worked well)

or get an old fashond amp that takes speaker inputs

should be quite cheap too

The red and white wires you talk of are the RCA's.

the Alana unit does not have these outputs. It can be done using the high/low passovers if your amp has that option, or there is a different connection - contact your local ICE specialist for info.

Personnally speaking, i'd change the headunit as the SQ will be poor from the Alana unit. Change to a nice shiney unit that has 5V preouts

Managed to get hold of a line output convertor for 5quid from my local ICE place. However coming out of one end is 5 wires 2 white, 2 grey one black...where do these go in the back of the headunit?

Not wanting to change headunit as want to keep steering wheel controls plus can't afford to.

Edit sticker on it says: white=left positive, white/black=left negative, black=ground, grey/black=right negative. grey=right positive

RCA'S thats the bugger thanks mate...(i'm getting on a bit now and the memory is not so sharp)

white / white with a black stripe is for one speaker input from your alana

grey is for the other speaker

black is earth

make sure you don't mix up the neg and pos

your alana will have similar colourd wires from it to go to your speakers

looks like you have a two speaker converter thats ok if your amp is only two channel

I've decided I hate stereo's!

Also says on the label For stereos with common ground output connect the grey/black and white/black to ground with the earth wire.....god I am stressed!

I don't think that will work unless you ground the neg side of the speakers

the alana is not common ground, your alana should have the same colour code system to connect up to

look for wires that are a pair ( a colour and the same colour with a black or maybe brown stripe that is a pair for one speaker pos and neg)

On some models not saying you can do it with the seat HU, you can hijack the cd changer input to create a phono out to connect to an amp.

Although you say you can't afford to get a new hu, I know for a fact that the standard controllers on the stearing wheel can be connected to an Alphine head unit

There is a line out connection on the top set of connections on the back of the head unit. I think its in the blue connector. Green is for the CD changer Yellow is for remote in and telephone in and the blue one is line out IIRC.

Pinout is as per the skoda / vw / audi line out connections.... A search of the tinterweb should find them

I had a sub and amp fitted to the standard Alana headunit, definately some way of doing it - you need a converter of sorts.

I'm not saying its the exact one but you need something with a yellow mini iso plug on one end and phono sockets on the other.... This will let you plug the amp directly to the line out on your head unit

Got to be worth a punt to see if it works There is audio comming out of those pins for sure on ibizas with steering wheel controls...
