wont start stright away ,turn the key a few times & then seems ok is this normal ?
Not normal no. Sounds like fuel starvation to me.
Get it on VAG-COM to see if any faults are coming up.

first port of call is as mentioned fuel filter, but also air filter. the air filter might be clogged up if it hasnt been changed recently, and go from there.
Id put my money on the fuel filter, doesnt sound like the air filter to me. Could also be that you were low on fuel and the pumps need to prime? If the car was warm, then I wouldnt think it would be glow plugs - although I think Vag-com will tell you if a glow plug has gone.
Had the same problem for the last couple of weeks, car starts as normal, then after say a stop at the shop when turning the engine back on it wouldn't start. Left for a few minutes it would start with a lot of black smoke.
Friday it did the same again so took the sons car to work, when I got home at 1 o'clock I decided to take it to the garage, they plugged in the computer to which no error showed up. the guy said it most likely to be the fuel filter. So went and bought a new filter and fitted it and touch wood so far so good.

i think they're replaced every 20k - but could be wrong. i know water collection within the filter can be an issue on some of the big plant i have worked on, espicially if the tanks have been drained lower than normal. Water sits on top of the deisal in the tank then when the tanks nearly empty the water gets drawn into the filter clogging it up. not sure if it appies to modern cars tho.
Yep, the water problem still occours in a modern diesel. If you look at the bottom of the fuel filter you will see a little tap for draining the water off. Also, water sinkes in diesel as it is heavier.
Fuel filter should be drained every 20K miles (for water) and changed every 40K. I often do mine a bit earlier to be safe.

I change mine everytime I do a oil change, to be honest for the cost of £8 for the filter at lest I know its done, also as I run on veggie its good to change more often.
I think a few people have tried it in the past with just a few litres per full tank. I wont try it in mine as I feel there is too much which could go wrong for such little gain.
Not worth the risk. Shame, as ive still got some veg oil left over from my last car...Similar threads
