just fitted a new stereo in my car, but I'd cut the old aerial plug off (cos I needed a male connection, not female), therefore just having a wire with no plug on the end. I've bought a new plug, that basically crimps on the end of the stripped cable. I'm now getting a crackling in the background of every station. Any help anyone? Also, I get no AM reception. Although I didn't get it on my original stereo anyway. Cheers!

you could have just bought an adaptor to convert from female to male ! ;)

but seeing as you've already cut the cable, that's no help!

it sounds like you've got a short somewhere between the centre core of the aerial co-ax lead, and the outer braid...... this will give you the crackling.

just re-wired my aerial (again). I get a perfect signal with engine off, but as soon as I'm driving, I get the crackling back. Also get no AM at all. Could it be that I need an aerial booster? please help as its really annoying. cheers!

do you have the standadr ariel or is it a stubby chrome one? if you have the oe ariel then clean the threads and degrease it, might make all the difference

crackling could be picked up from it needing to be 'supressed'... a form of attenuation to stop elctrical interactivity between the aerial and other nearby wires etc :)
