If you put it that way the 20vt sounds a very good idea, get a doner use the bits you need and make money selling of the rest.

Superchargings different and it sounds crazy :)

if i could find the mk1 golf turbo vid you'd fall off ya chair [B)] says its a 20vt but have seen it said it was in fact a 16v

:edit: found it

Just a shame you lose all the OE reliability

still interesting, but I think too dear considering how little you can swap engines for

As some of you may or may not know, I'm supercharging mine. Not costing quote that much though.

I called in a lot of favours when it came to gathering parts.

Oh, and I'm not bothered about losing OE reliability because I don't have any!

unfortunatly not mate. I never got the nos plumbed in properly. I brought the nos and then fitted as a purge kit while i sorted the charger. Never got round to actually running with the nos. always time though .. . .

 I was about to ask....

where the hell is your N2O/Petrol injector as i can't see it on the inlet

Maybe worth fixing that before you start blowing hot air into it then....

16v's are reliable simple engines... if you're skimping on maintenance it'll start to run poorly / unreliabley

If you can't afford to maintain it now, but are going to FI it, then you're setting yourself up for a BIG fall since I don't believe that a home brew conversion (esp one where you lower the compression with two head gaskets) is going to prove to be more reliable than no FI at all.

You've missed out new long bolts & cam belt if you're having the head off.

Also good quality jubilee clips, gaskets for the inlet manifold & throttle body (what throttle body?) and probably a new throttle cable.

And wiring & tuning.... and a wideband lambda probe

I think you need to add on another £500 - £750

the wiring and tuning is in the megasquirt price

yeh clips and that will be worked out, it had a cam belt done not long ago, but suppose i better change it anyway lol

yeh charging is different and soudns immense, i prefer it to turbos, it means i'll have mucho higer torque all the way along the rev range, as to a turbo that goes mad at the end of the rev range.

that mk1 is immense

yeh around £800 was the basic parts lol

it's all a case of 'may as well'

cam cover gasket needs to be added to. and budget for some remedial work should your tappets need changing when you get there.

I can afford to maintain it, and I don't skimp on maintenence. Mine just has lots stupid problems.

What's the best way to lower compression?

ste4232 do you have any pictures of your s'chargers installation?? i.e pictures of where your s'chargers mounted?? Please

I have but not with me. I basically removed air con pump and made custom alternator brackets to drop charger down to where air con used to be. Then made more custom brackets for charger mounting. It still runs standard belt!!! easy for spares and cheap too!

I wouldn't recommend anyone to try conversion if you trying to do a cheap conversion (extras soon add up) and you will need fair bit of trial and error so your car may be off road for a while. BUT i did my homework and with help from a very useful uncle carried out full converion in 2 days!!!!

the way that i'm mounting my charger is dropping the alternator to where the air con pump was and then putting the charger in the alternator's place. I think thats how it's going anyway lol. we'll see on the day lol
