suspension removal

How has everyone removed their
lcr suspension?

I can;t seem to drop the wish bone low enough for the dampner
to slide out of the clamp

Any information would be greatly apreciated

me and james did his
you need a "spreader" or something to hammer in and wedge the hub apart enough-round the back as you look at it, then get a mallet and tap it down until the damper comes free at the bottom

well that was what i thought of trying but didn't want to damage anything
but if you did it then i guess everything should be good

just make sure as your tapping it down, the spreader doesnt shift/keep moving it in
and dont go mental and smash the hub.
you'll be able to see if its working becuase the damper will have the line on it from where its always sat (kind of tidal mark thing-get me)

We've got it loose and movement in the strut, but there isnt enough swing in the wishbone/swingarm in order to lower it enough for the strut to split from th hub! The only way round it that i can see is dis-assemble the wishbone assembly so it will let the whole lot drop lower

Confusin us lot as never seen a set up like this, its norm straight forward.

yeah you cant fit the whole strut out on the drivers side. You can do it buy compressing the spring while the struts still on the car though.

how do you compress the srings though as you can not fit spring compressors in there?

i managed to get some in before, if you use the ones that are like two sticks with the claws on them you should just be able to cram them in once you've dropped the struts. Or, you can bodge it with ratchet straps but thats a bit of a pikey way lol

but threre is no way of compressing the spring any where near enough to releave the compresion to be able to lift the strut high enough to lit out of the clamp

any how tom you have got a tdi are you sure yours is even the same as an LCR as i hve never seen a set up hte same as this before?

take the anti roll bar off the wishbone then you'll be able to hammer it down and leave the top mount tight till you haev the strut out of the wishbone

hmm good point, the struts i did were on a 1.8t golf aswell lol. Are the lcr's 4wd? I've managed to find the guide i used, dont know if it'll be any help to you; http://www.nclh.org/car/coilover_howto/

use a chizel (sp) to spread the wishbne clamp this makes it easier to get the strut out when beating it with a hammer!

yeh the chizel works, they use some tool on that guide but chizel or scewdrivers also good lol

still no luck

Just can not physically get the hub low enough to get it out

well 4 hours later and i have finally finished and got it all done

however in the process to tightening the top mount we managed to shatter the bearings
so im now with out a car until i can get a new mount
