TDI Panel filters.. Not the usual thread

Saw a caddy the other day with a pd130 conversion, car was imaculate... Though i noticed he wasnt running any air filter at all... It was literally the inlet manifold... with the plastic inlet pipe on, just hanging in the engine bay with the standard sensor on the end.
It sounded apsolutely amazing... but surely this cannot be done... would consume warm air? and clog up easily?

Just wondered what the views on this are... Surely its a real good idea if you had no filter... and vented straight to the front of the car... but the risks of sucking in crap are to great?

Running without a filter would be a bit stupid.

Last thing you want is dirt & dust being sucked into your engine.
Even worse on a turbo'd engine - tiniest bit of debris entering your turbo while it's spinning at silly high speeds would be terminal !

yep agreed, so not only a ton of hot air ingested but likely to pick up crap to ruin the internals. avoid!

Maybe it had a tubular piece of foam stuck up the intake pipe, I have seen this before.

The air filter is the most important filter. Your engine would run a long long time without a fuel filter or an oil filter. But the air filter keeps a lot of harmful stuff out of your engine, and it prevents contamination of the mass airflow (MAF) sensor.

There is no reason to run without an air filter, except that his work under the hood was incomplete.

Well, it would run until it ran out of fuel because the fuel lines were disconnected, or all the oil had pissed out of the filter housing anyway - could be a bit messy
