Yes I agree but part of the sales pitch is they are using 5xCAN-FD interface to make car diagnostics even more efficient and used the words you could see more control units. I am just trying to see if anybody else has used it and found more.

The only restrictions I've found with modules that use CAN-FD and DoiP protocol have been during flashing them. For general diagnostics, like what OBDELEVEN offers, I can't really see it being a huge game changer, unless they intend to expand their offerings to flashing modules 🤷‍♂️

CAN-FD - Controller area network - FLEXIBLE DATA-RATE

DoiP - Diagnostics over Internet Protocol

Both are not required for code checking, live data, small adjustments etc

Well as I say its what they were advertising but they are also expanding there car supported range of motors so will have to wait and see if it makes any difference.

The main difference is that the Gen3 supposedly has the hardware for SFD 2 but the Gen 2 does not

I've ordered OBD11 3 (just in case) but in my limited and short usage period I found it working the same as OBD11 NextGen in my Leon MK3 - same connection speed, same reading and writing speed, same features...

Where have you found that information? That's the only table with differences that I was able to find and it does not contain anything like that. Regarding SFD2 they posted video lately stating that they are still working on it, nothing more: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/7LlLLUsH5ew

Glad to see they have updated the table because originally it said it supported android 6 (as do the Amazon apps).
I have an open issue with OBD11 because this table says they support K-LINE but https://support.obdeleven.com/en/articles/10053429-volkswagen-group-features-in-the-obdeleven-app has the following comment

9. What vehicles will work with the OBDeleven app?

The OBDeleven app is compatible with vehicles that use CAN-bus or KWP2000 protocols, which includes most modern cars. However, vehicles that use the older K-line protocol, such as the Volkswagen Golf 4, Volkswagen Passat B5, Audi B6, and other models of similar years, are not supported.

so currently the dongle supports it but the obd11 (not vag) app does not.

to quote Don (DV52) https://forum.obdeleven.com/post/127236

As for your assumption, my guess is that the real reason for V3 is the changing OBD industry Standards and the need to make OBD11 future proof (at least for the medium term). Fact is that the newest generation vehicles are operating at the limits of the current OBD-II protocols in the current NEXT-GEN dongle because of contemporary enhancement in technology! The part of the OBD11 software that's downloaded to remote users from behind the central servers at HQ can easily manage these advancements - but hardware limitations in the OBD11 dongle components can not! Hence the need for periodic new dongles!! And of course, the release of new dongles is good for marketimng!!

I'm sure that the game of OBD11 dongle catch-up will continue in future years

I'm sticking with my trusty obd11 V1 (white) and 2017 car. I'd only change it if it broke, I moved off Android or changed car where a newer dongle might better support it. It's going to be what happens to SFD2 if you are a current user and stay with Vag. My hunch is with the company now supporting more brands they wanted a dongle that could be used across. It's more about what the company wanted to use across brands.
