So here are the pics from fitting the HIDs today.

Unclipping, unplugging and removing the original bulb

25mm woodbit to make a hole in the back plate for the grommet

After bulb swap, a bit of jiggery pokery with the bulb clip, connecting the cabling and getting the grommet in place.

This is where the first ballast is, will get a better fitting some time when I'm not worried about sudden rain.

After doing the same on the passenger side, this is where I left that ballast.

Cheers Tom, the sidelights were a pain in the arse with my sausage fingers  They don't seem very bright either? I'll find out for good this evening though. Nice cheap easy mod that looks the part :)

Looks like you have located the passenger side ballast in the cold air ducting??
Much better places than that also will get wet as air/rain mix from grill will be forced in here

Oops, maybe I have. I remember reading someones post on this forum saying there was something 'shelf-like' right by the headlamp on the passenger side and I assumed that was it. Might go and change it now if you're right.

I've just used the sticky pads to put the them on washer bottle and innrerwing. You were right about the cold air ducting, thanks for pointing it out. I haven't got time to spend on it today as it keeps pouring with rain intermittently.

Tell me about it i still need to- finish battery relocation and add inline kill switch, reseal drivers door, fit new side light bulbs due to both being dead, fit short shift and reset gearbox linkages, rebush rear beam with new poly bushes, fit 10mm spacers to rear and clean car inside and out as not been done in 6 months.
Oh and properly locate and secure my ballasts

I need to reseal my drivers door too. Another thing I noticed after fitting the HID's was the large amount of condensation in my headlamps. I even got a cloth out to wipe them as I thought it was on the outside but it wasn't

Here is a pic of the lights on at night, both the sidelight and headlight seem brighter on the drivers side  it appears that way while driving it too. I'll have to look at them tomorrow but the difference is amazing, no need for full beams at all. I drove down some unlit country roads tonight and they are so much better than the OEM lights. Lovely colour too :) Pretty sure my old side lights were much brighter though, the ones from this kit are pretty crap to be honest.

Pic is taken from the top of the drive hence the glare.

Right - I've decided to service the car myself. The oil filter was replaced when I got it, the air filter I've done myself so I'll change the oil, spark plugs and fuel filter and keep the receipts. That gives me enough to get some new front tyres as well. So I'll have about £100 odd for a mod this month. What to go for? Should I get a forge tip? A 007 dv? Or should I start getting the parts for the FMIC... I can't decide. I'm not going to get any power gains from the DV or TIP (can't justify the cost of 3" for now) and the FMIC would give me a good bit of work to do and maybe a bit of extra torque.

Hmm... can't decide. My budget is fairly low for the next 2 months but will go up again so I need to do them one at a time. Any suggestions?

Oh yeah, when I fitted the HIDs the battery was disconnected for a good couple of hours (it didn't take me that long but I had to break due to rain ;) ) - since then it feels much more responsive and my friend said it felt a lot quicker than before which I noticed too. Maybe it's working better with the new air filter now, or my TB has realigned or something, either way I'm loving the car again.

007p was my 1st mod mate, these cars drive so much better with them fitted get one ordered! get 10% discount from forge, but ring around, awesome gti might be cheaper? ask for up to date forum discounts if any as I know forge you get one and code is sc10. get it done ;)

p.s HID's looking good mate!

you can leave the TIP till you remap it and save for a 3" one from badger go straight to that. standard TIP won't collapse on oem mapped LCR so you can do other stuff like work towards fmic like I did. I wouldn't bother with fmic till warmer months, fitted mine last august so I could log the temp reductions on vag com. showed a 10-15 degree reduction in intake temps! sweet.

check condition of the wishbone bushes etc, all of mine need replacing now and looking back a year from the start, I wish I had done these sooner as the car feels rough now when hitting even small bumps the bushes are all shot except the dogbone mount. if you haven't changed that actually, the powerflex one it's only about £20 delivered! great mod.

My passenger side HID is not as bright as the drivers side :( and it flickers a tad. Going to swap the ballasts and try to find the point of fault - but ultimately if I can't sort it I'll have to send them back. Not very convenient when I have to use the car every day in the dark :( Sometimes they don't turn on either, they just flicker then die.

Was thinking the same with the TIP mate, not going to bother until I get stage 2 then get the 3" jobby especially after seeing your gains with one ;) I heard you don't feel any difference at all with a 007p, it's just upgraded for reliability reasons?

Another option I have is to buy a set of hoses and replace as many as I can afford to... although that's more of an aesthetic mod.

Cheers

Easy to do? If so then at that price I may as well do it on top of the other mod.

Hope you sort the HID's mate. Check all connections and ballasts but don't mess about too much, they should have been fine from day one so send them back if no good. Annoying I know. You didn't get my HID's did you? I can recommend them highly think I posted the link in your readers ride few pages back? Rushing out in a sec otherwise would dig them out for you but mine have been spot on for 5/6 months now.

007p is more reliable than standard DV, but works better, car will feel better for it. I notice the tiniest difference as I drive mine daily and it definitely felt better with it fitted. Holds boost better mid to top end compared to weak plastic bosch dv I found personally. Others may disagree. But 99% of people on here won't map an LCR without an uprated DV bud. Gotta service mine soon and maybe change the spring as it's running standard green spring but think I need yellow as there's alot more boost now. Spring kits are cheap enough from Forge too.
3" TIP the way to go if your wanting max potential for the k04. Mine gained bhp and torque as expected to how it was driving, and proven on the same dyno from previous run with forge tip. Great bit of kit.

Hoses do as and when you can, upper boost hoses going to charge pipe and to manifold are big one's to do. But smaller one's around the DV to charge pipe etc can split so check all of these. Forge site has all the essential hoses you need on there. I'm uprating all of mine over time for forge silicone for peace of mind mate.

The dogbone mount is fairly simple to do you need car raised up, and the actual bush has to be tightened on to the right torque settings otherwise you could get massive vibration in the cabin. It will cause some as it needs to settle as it's a tough polybush but couple of weeks later should be settled and your wheelhop is near eliminated. Great mod!!

Gotta shoot now sorry but let me know if you don't have the link to my HID's in your thread and I will send them to you. They still sell them on ebay. :)

Cheers Tom, no I didn't get your HID's as mine were a few quid cheaper with free side lights. Guess I got what I paid for... DV it is then, if I can keep my eyes off that toyo cooler :D

You right, a 007p or TIP wont give gains, but when you get up to stage 2 mapped territory the oem ones start to fail. You want a 007p, TIP, fmic and exhaust and get it stage 2 mapped

Cheers Brad, thats the route I'm planning to go down. Any difference between those DV's apart from the silly lettering?
