From what i've read, the correct driver to suit your cable type is suplied with the cable on a disc.

I've spent literally hours browsing through the vag-com section on here, and there has been many issues with people not receiving the correct driver for their cable.

Im still unsure as to whether i received the correct driver for myn.

There are some websites where you can down load specific drivers.

When i insert the disc which was supplied with my vag-com cable, it automatically loads and displays a new window.
This new window shows the vag-com software 4091, and a folder names USB DRIVER.

Within the folder, i have these files, see screen print below...

printscreen1.jpg

I am completely lost as to what i need to do next. Im assuming i need to install the driver, but which of those files is my driver? And none of those files are capable of being opened on my laptop, i don't have the appropriate operating program?

Anydoy got any suggestions on how to install the driver?
Which file it is?

The driver my laptop referenes when i plug in the cable is: FTDI FT8U2XX

Any suggestions really appreciated. Thanks.

Anyone got any suggestions on which file above is the driver?

And what i have to do with it?

I know its not plug in and play, but i'm still convinced the reason it don't work is down to the fact i don't have the right driver/or i haven't installed the driver.

when u plug the lead in does it pop up with install new hardware?

if so it'll ask for a driver location, point it to that folder and it'll find it on it's own!

If i doesn't goto control panel - system - hardware - device manager. U should see a question mark on the icon for the adaptor. right click and go update driver and do as above.

once you do that go to properties - port settings - advanced and select the port number (e.g. com1)

I have an update!!

I was convinced i was doing something fundamentally wrong, so i started from scratch and tried to install the drivers and vag-com onto my sister desktop computer....and surprise surprise...within 3minutes of starting, vagcom was recognising the cable interface!!! So big smile on my face!

Now the problem...

I got it working on my sisters DESKTOP computer, my car is on the drive 30ft away!! lol.

Now my question is...can i buy a super long USB extension lead and will it still work ok?

Also...any ideas why it works on my desktop computer but not on my laptop...both computers are running XP, and my laptop is pretty high spec'd so in theory it should be more capable.

Thanks to all those that tried to help me before!!

I use a USB extension on a NON-RossTech cable, works fine. It's just 1 meter, but it works.

Ross-tech seems to state that only their cables can be used asan extension...

http://www.ross-tech.com/Merchant2/m...ategory_Code=A

That is not what our site says. What our site says is these are the only extension cables Ross-Tech will support as we have extensively tested these and found them to be compatible with all models and our interface cables.

What we are not willing to do is spend our time resolving problems with cables that may be suspect and ones which we have not evaluated.

We do recommend that if you buy an extension cable from someone else, you use a USB 2.0 Active cable. Remember, if you have trouble communicating to your car, first step is to remove the extension cable.

Oki thanks!

I asked the I.T wizards at work, USB is more than capable of still picking up a signal 10m away. Thats without any signal amplifiers.

Think i need to purchase a 10m cable now then.

This info's from this thread, it might help you....
http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=127881

The info below is what i had to do the get vag-com to work

I couldn't get it to work properly either, personally i'd uninstall 409 and install 311.2 which is the version i'm now using, with my Alpha-bid USB cable.

You will also need Windows XP home should do it, cos i couldn't get win2000 pro to accept the FTDI USB drivers. from here http://www.autonostics.com/pages.php?pageid=3

To summerize what i found to work

Windows XP (home)
Alpha-bid USB cable (£3.99) + P&P
Ross-tech 311.2 software version (free)
FTDI USB drivers listed above (free) top one not the alternate driver.
you'll more than likely need to go into device manager and change the com3 port settings BAWD rate from 9600 to 4800. cos I couldn't get it work at 9600

You'll also need to buy a license from Ross-Tech at $99 (£50) to get any access to your car, cos the free software won't allow you to change any settings..

I had similar problems to you and found that taking my pcmcia wireless adapter card out made it work. Dont know if you use a wirless network if you do and have a card take it out, if built in try switching it off.
Sometimes to get it working i have to switch ignition off, reboot vagcom switch on again and maybe a few times of doing this.
Hope this helps as i know how annoying it can be.

Cupraloon: I really appreciate all that you've done above. I haven't really treid it yet properly. I've pretty much tried everything you've suggested, other than changing the bawd rate, which i quickly changed last night but made no difference.

Kieran: yeh my laptop operates on a wireless network. The wireless card is within the laptop so maybe i should try turning it off? As the wireless function is constantly switched on. I shall try it tonight.

The thing that makes matters a little more confusing, is the fact that when in vagcom and you carry out the 'test' procedure on com1 / com2 / com3/ com4, i'm not sure if the cable should be plugged into the car or not. Mork above states it doesnt need to be, and he's a man of knowledge.

BUT...Mork is proven because when i treid installing it on my home desktop computer, it worked first time and the software recoginsed the cable. But the problem here is the fact my desktop computer is in the study room, 25m away from my car sat on the drive!
So i'm now in the process of trying to purchase a USB extension cable to reach the 25m length.

I've pretty much given up with trying to get it working on my laptop. :(

Thanks to all though.

Yeah i had all but given up and was ready to sell my lead on [:@] but after reading about the wireless situation i tried without this in and it worked, like i said sometimes it still takes a few goes. Think i read somwhere that it sometimes wont work with different things running on your pc/laptop.
Good luck
