A lot of insurers will not even insure a car that has had an engine swap. I looked into an upgrade to a 1.6 engine (from a 1.4) as had one offered to me for free and the quotes were ridiculous. Insurance was £900+ if I was to swap the engine for the 1.6. This is compared to my usual insurance of £300 on the 1.4. That was at 21 with 4 years no claims!

I work in insurance and probably the main factor for drivers is age... Seems unfair but I have seen the stats for the most collisions and also most costly claims and it is young drivers so is right really.

Just ran a few quotes through though and I can get fully comp on a 2.8L VW Vr6 for £760 and a 2.0L 16v cupra for £600..... Tempting!

roughly how much would a mk1 golf gti be to insure i cant find what group they are

im 18 but my old nanna would be the main driver

I can't see it being cheap, maybe around the 1k mark. Insurance companies will see the golf gti as having no safety features and a big engine with a young driver.

combination for lots of £££££

Yeah I saw this as well. Thought it would be worth a look, but as I have no money to buy a 3rd mk2 or insure an engine swap I thought better of it. Hope the owner ends up on here, want to see how good it was :D
