the 1.8 16v in the Mk2 golf gti for instance was a superb engine, loads of poke especially considering it's old school now.

so what happened when it went 2L?
8v AGG 120 'ish bhp, 130 'ish torque
16v ABF 150 'ish torque ??
not exactly big power per litre

The fact that Honda have long been getting 100bhp per litre without the use of forced induction and even their 20 year old cars are still up to scratch today performance wise speaks volumes.

even my pre-V-tec M-rtec '91 Beat came with 100bhp/L from new
OK so it's only 660cc and now 20yrs later has 60 left , torque is non-existent...45lb/ft means you have to work it but its part of the fun with n/a engines

there's no such thing as 'better', just different, i love my 2CV's engine just as much as the FR's CR170

The Golf GTI got heavier and heavier as the years and models went by. Partly legislation (more crash resistance) and partly just feature creep. I had both a Mk.1 and a Mk.2 at various times. The Mk.1 was a silly-grin car, that's how you felt every time you got out of it. The Mk.2 was less impressive.

It'd be interesting to see how many of you have driven one properly and how many of you have just been left for dead by one whilst you faff around with lag and whooshy dump ( read sh1t) valves ;-)

had one right up my arse on the m6 coming back from manchester drop to forth gear and left him even with my failing actuator :), i 've driven ep3 type r's and the older 1.6 type r and they love to rev but just have no torque and its gets annoying having to always drop to 2nd to ge any peformance

No torque :D

They have enough torque to go with the revs and the gearing;) They're meant for people who enjoy driving

...and getting punched in the back by a turbo means I hate driving? :p

As an owner of both (still have the EK4) I can appreciate the different driving styles and they really aren't comparable. Put simply a Stage 2 LCR makes the VTECs look silly in all forms but somehow it just doesn't feel as raw and fun to drive as my old Civic. I guess what I am trying to say is that when I got in my Civic I knew that I could push it so hard in the corners/B roads and that death was very much a possiblity. Driving on the edge makes it fun, much like motorsport. Fun doesn't have to be the fastest.

This doesn't make any sense at all, I've read it 2 times to be sure.

I think...... you meant to say

VTEC feels like a pile of dung beetle excretion

A turbo feels like a sports car.

What doesn't make sense.
VTEC feels more like a race car because your high revving it and most race cars peak power is up very high (F1 and NASP WTCC Cars)

Ours don't feel that racy because their Turbo'd 1.8's but their still faster...

And yes, I've driven one properly and I loved it, However I honestly prefer the low down torque of my LCR

If i was going for a 2.0 n/a would have to be a clio 182 cup or trophy better that a CTR not reliabilty wise but faster and better handling, if someone says to me civic type r i atomatically think of some teenager with his hair gelled forward reving the nuts off his red CTR with tinted window, Good cars that have been destoryed by boyracers

there are 2 hondas in the top 3 standings in the touring cars so they cant be all that bad.ok they are turbo charged.

we aren't talking about tourings cars your missing the point a little i think , the comparison between 1.8t road cars and 1.6-2.0 litre vtec lumps , low end torque wins hands down for me , got to remember your on the road not a race track it's the best compromise imo
