Yes, Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Skoda all share power units. However, some models of one make may not use an engine that the equivalent model of another make does use.
For example in the UK at least, the 86 PS version of the 1.2 TSI petrol is used in the Skoda Fabia and Audi A1 but not in the SEAT Ibiza and VW Polo.
The 1.4 petrol and 1.6 TDI diesel are used in both VW Polo and SEAT Ibiza.

yep, though if you do mainly town driving the 1.4 petrol will be a better option (or even better the 1.2tsi)

Thanks folks, is the 1.2 not a bit slow. will be on motorway most weekends so was wanting something that is fairly capable on the m/way too. ideally I would prefer the 1.6 tdi but its all down to cost.
They are both VW units, but the 1.6 TDI and 1.2 TSI engines are a lot newer! The 1.4s design dates back to the Polo 16v from 1996.
Both engines have their merits. The 1.6 TDI is very good as long as you aren't doing loads of urban stop-start driving. If you are, the well publicised DPF issue may rear its head. However if you keep the TDI clear of the stop/start stuff it should prove economical and reliable and still be fairly nippy.
Don't let the 1.2TSI engine capacity put you off. This is one seriously nippy wee car! I test drove one and found it hard to believe there was only a wee 1200cc engine under the hood! Remember this engine is turbocharged and produces 105BHP! The 1.2 is actually a wee bit quicker than the 1.6TDI and it seems that reported fuel consumption figures are almost as good in real-life driving as the diesel. This engine won't mind lots of urban driving and (apart from some early teething problems) the engines seem reliable. I wouldn't consider the 1.2TSI as being a poor second choice if you can't stretch to the TDI. Bear in mind that the price difference between both models (TDI normally significantly more expensive to buy new and used) would mean you'd have to cover a lot of miles annually in the TDI for its better economy to justify its higher price.

Certainly don't. The 105 PS power is about what you'd expect from a 1.6 NA petrol but the torque is more like that from a 1.8. What's more the torque is all available from a low 1550 rpm.
Yesterday the two of us were up on Dartmoor and we climbed the hill out of Dartmeet (visitors may remember it) in third gear with the engine revving at about 1750 rpm. IIRC this hill reaches a maximum of 20% gradient! Mind you the instant mpg readout was showing about 15 mpg.
I suspect that a 1.6 TDI unaffected by DPF troubles might perhaps do 5-10 mpg better but one trouble is the huge variation in 1.6 TDI mpg figures we are seeing. If you buy one you don't quite know what to expect.
i think from what people say about poor mpg in the 1.6tdi you would be far better off with the 1.2tsi, it will be mint around town and on a long journey i can get 47mpg in my 1.4tsi so i'd assume the 1.2 to at least hit the 50s!
If I had to choose between the 2 engines, I'd go for the 1.2TSI. In fact I was very seriously considering buying a new 1.2TSI Sportrider, but then I got offered an extermely good deal on my FR. The rest, my friend, is history! lol

Whats you average mpg then? ours is 38mpg on very short trips which I think is great, performance whilst its no sports car is excellent for a NA 1.4 IMO. . .
Fuel economy on mine is pretty good, average 45 - 50 mpg daily motorway commuting, have seen 65mpg once on a long run. Performance is adequate. Its not a bad little engine.
I believe the engines are basically the same.... Either Seat think 150/180PS will break a manual gearbox (VERY unlikely) or they think the DSG is what most of their customers want.
I think it's the latter.... I also think they may be wrong! lol Personally I like a manual gearbox.

Actually the more I think about it, I just think it's just Seat's Marketing Dept that made the call. Couldn't be that difficult to mate a manual box with the TSI engines, could it? I really should stop replying to posts without thinking things through first! lol
i would like a manual i think, but on todays roads auto is so much easier, and I'd always feel unhappy when someone with a dsg outdoes me on the strip!
