I'm not wanting to drag this on any longer than necessary, but I think the main reason for needing to use 508 on certain engines had could tolerate it, was to comply with the latest emissions/fuel economy testing than for any thing else - using 504 instead is okay - no mention of 507 as it seems to be a diesel only spec so no need to quote it in connection with petrol engines.
Note that some petrol engines have not been cleared for using 508 "super eco" oil, including the Cupra ones. VW make it clear that normally all oils are backwards compatible - with currently, the exception of 508, it can only be used with certain newer engines.
