I painted a full set of door handles and barrel covers. This project was started about a year ago and I finally got round to finishing it off.

Handles were sanded, primed followed by base coat and 2k clear coat. I then wet sanded the orange peel and polished. Quite pleased with the results given I don’t have any prior experience at paint.

Hopefully it’ll be a durable finish.

View attachment 54057Now for the sting in the tail - when swapping old for new door handles I’ve loosened the lock ring carriers too much on both the front doors and the lock ring has dropped into the door cavity. Looks like I’m in for a full door strip x2!!
its a pain to match metallic .. lucky the paint on the door not faded with the sun

So that's another job slowly rising to the top of my to-do list... Took this after 45 minutes at motorway speeds and I know my car doesn't run that cold. Trouble is I know it's not just the sensor I'll need to replace, but I'll have to add coolant after too. The Febi replacement I put in a few years ago has never worked perfectly, but now it's not even close. When I went through a 40mph section it dropped even lower than that.

What's the OEM brand for the CTS? Not using Febi again for the new one.

If your CTS from Febi has the ref;: FE32510 then the OEM should be: 059919501A from HELLA.

Are you sure its the CTS not the thermostat? Check your coolant temp when cold. Bad sensor shows a high degrees celsius.

What Connor said, highly unlikely it's the temp sensor. 99% chance it's the thermostat. Classic symptoms of failing to hold 90C on the motorway,

There's a drain tap on the bottom passenger side of the radiator. You can drain the coolant into a clean container and reuse it.

Thanks so much for this - you're right that it does sound like it could be the thermostat more than anything. I changed the coolant temperature sensor originally because it was throwing a code and giving me a check engine light, so it probably did need changing (if only to get it through the MoT), but it's always never come up to temperature fully since, so changing it might have just made it more obvious that the thermostat is failing - especially with it getting worse over time. It's the original, so it makes sense.

Luckily, thermostats are cheap, so I'll get one and a new housing and see how it goes. Found this video on YouTube and while I've got the ARL engine, it looks pretty similar.

Now I just have to have a think on whether there are any 'while I'm in there' jobs I could do while the coolant is drained - like if I want to put an OEM temperature sensor in anyway just to be safe. I've always got on with Febi, but OEM is OEM after all...

No worries. I've never done a thermostat on the diesel engines so I can't really give any advice, but it's not too bad a job on the petrol engines.

How did you match the paint? Looks perfect. šŸ‘

Just used the paint code for platinum grey. For small parts like door handles, I don’t think paint match is a big problem due to the different angles the light hits. Maybe I got lucky too?!?
this is what i did but paint was slightly faded you don't see it until its on, the same local autopaint shop then matched the paint , mine is red and some paints fade worse than others, i had paint fade on the bonnet and rear bumper when i got it but buffed that out.. if i had one of the detailing machines ill bet the whole card would go back to the same code .. as when i did that trim i did that side before hand and it come back up and i wished i did the bloody passenger door also lol , i said ******* like Sean Bean
