Bit of a random question but has anyone failed an mot after fitting a catch tank that vents to atmosphere? I've read of failed mot's in the US but not in sure if its a fail over here.
 
Given that the first post for this was in 2007 I'd like to think not :) The UK emission regulations don't seem to be as strict (we just get taxed to high heaven for it)
 
US is far stricter anyway, hence the N249 valve fitted to our cars standard

its definately a mod I would recommend. Looks good, works a treat and doesn't costs silly money
 
When ppl remove they pvc valve, who did it by removing the complete inlet manifold? Did you reuse gasket, would it be ideal? How much is a new gasket from stealers or gsf?
Thinking of just removing TB and IC pipe instead.
 
I didnt remove the inlet but it would be far easier if i had of removed it (back in the days of knowing nothing) If you decide to remove it for the sake of a couple of quid do the gasket aswell, id also do the TB gasket also.

True say, how long did it take do your pvc valve? :D Give it try with out removing inlet, Took 2hours just find sutiable location for tank and remove mushrom on tip an fit the piping to it, :redface:
 
Just fitted mines, was thinking, wouldnt it be easier to block of the vacum for the pvc valve and inlet manifold? as the pvc T peice wouldnt restrict it the oily fume flow. save time (and may be my dip stick)

Is it suppose to smell like petrolly fumes? just about see the fumes coming out the piping, so i just routed it next stock cold air feed, just curious as dont want car bonnet blowing up. lol
 
If you blocked off the vacuum line to the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) (not pvc :whistle: ) valve it would remain closed and thus the crancase would not vent at all!! by removing the valve completely it is constantly venting or 'open'. :D
 
Normally ppl would jus replace T peice witha straight through pipe.

If just blocked vacum on top of the pvc, it just would flow straight through, as pipe to pvc is bung up.
 
Sorry everyone for bringing this thread back up. Just want to make sure I'm doing it right. Mine is all stripped out. No TIP or anything.

Did mine over the weekend and was also surprised how much I'd collected in just a couple of thousand miles. Looks disgusting doesn't it. A well worthwhile mod
 
Yeh nasty stuff, got some on my face when jet blastin it wid d hose lol
Mainly water wid alot of sludge, good mod to keep the engine clean, as 1st i taught it wasnt workin but now it is lol.
had 2 replace the pipe on the side of the catch can as it was blocked and unable 2 see. oh well

yea the sight gauge pipe on mine could do with replaceing as its clouding up abit

yea must be well good for the engines health very very worth while doing id say and is fairly cheap to do so any one can do it realy
 
Oil catch tank fitted..just to make sure i fitted it properly..

1st i took the pcv t piece out, removed pcv valve from it, blanked it and put it back so t-piece is now just like a joiner...

then i took out "the mushroom thingy" from TIP and blanked the hole in the TIP.

then i reused ruber hose that used to be connected to mushroom thingy , and connected it to the catch can and then just used another hose from catch can down to wing..

i dont have any kind of filter on the end of the hose in the wing cuz air is blowing out from it...
if this is correctly connected there is no really point in the catch can right?
i could just use a piece of hose instead of it and let all the oil and condensation just leak under the car...
 
so basically buying an oil catch can is a waste of money if you plan to vent into atmosphere..
catch tank only makes sense if you are venting back to TIP...
 
No. The exact opposite, if you lose the PCV too.

The idea is to prevent blow-by fluids from re-entering the intake and leaving oily deposits in the TIP/turbo/intercooler.

If you're venting to atmosphere then you're preventing any waste at all being re-circulated
 
hm.....so if you are venting to intake than blowby fluids will be stuck in the catch can...but if u dont vent into the intake then u dont need catch can...all fluids can just drip out of the hose under the car
