yeah every one is mate, why did'nt seat print this info in the R appendix book that you get with the other books? idiots :(

seat have not got a clue or even vw and audi regarding,503.00 + 503.01 etc, they mostly know by enthusiasts like ourselves telling them or they are forced to find out, cause ppl like us dont take s*it,and not just about oil but alot of other things like we know thro vag com,e.g nick @ the mo seems to know more about the cat dtc's than his dealer, they do it for a living ffs,(not all dealers are the same though),just takes time to find a good en

Went for Castrol SLX in the end by virtue of the fact that it is the only 503.01 oil I could find. Will probably search a bit more for Shell Helix Ultra 5w30 when I have my oil change. As you suggest dealer was useless. Tried to encourage me to put magnatec in on the grounds that they would use for this my oil change (If you haven't seen the thread I started about Colliers in Brum, the service department said they would invalidate my warranty if I insisted on using my own oil for the change - muppets!). I tried to tell them that what goes in at the oil change is pretty much irrelevant - they didn't know anything about 503.01 oils.

Cheers for your help

Dan thats an absolute disgrace mate,i will take a looksie @ the thread on colliers mate, slx mate is tops bmw use this, also found out via the tt forum the is the preferred choice on the 225 and 250 (v6) engines, and even audi stealerships are crap with the knowlegde on this matter,

i feel really sorry with the ppl, with variable service intervals, they have f*ck all chance of getting the right oil in thier sumps!!!!!!!!!!!!!this is what truly fecks thier engines, luckily seat says 10k for ours,
btw if you are on variables and top up with more than half a liter over the time betwwen services the oil sensor is no longer accurate,so you have to have it done anyhow :roflmao: ,and what chance of getting castrol SLX(longlife) have you got when your out and about somwhere, thats why audi supply a bottle @ a cost of course the in the boot, variable is a crap way of maintaining a car

This oil biz is really confusing !

I have tread all the threads & links but really still confused.

Surely the dealerships Seat / Audi / VW would have to have oil that was the correct spec for the engine?

Where is the definative documented release from say, Seat or Audi for this 503.01 specification etc?

What about Synta Gold ? Is this not absolutely suitable ?
It is the best That VAG offer after all?

Based on Colliers in Birmingham, dealers don't have a clue - I certainly won't rely on them and I pray I never have to get anything sorted under warranty there.

Not sure about offical confimation from Seat, VW etc, but on this (or another recent oil related thread) Vern posted a link to a TT forum with a list of 503.01 oils (TT having the same engine - excluding the 3.2l).

I'm finding it very frustrating too. You wouldn't expect topping oil up to be such a hassle.

Not sure about Synta Silver (semi-syn) and Synta Gold (fully-syn) - Is it the same as Unipart Silver and Gold? I ask the question because my dealer didn't sell any oil with the name 'Synta' on it.

Synta Gold

I have a 5 litre container in front of me...

The label on the front says that it is 'Approved to VW 502.00/505.00 (01/97).

The label on the back says that it is 'SAE 5W-40' and suitable for 'fuel injected or turbo-charged gasoline engines' and 'In addition to Audi, Volkswagen, Seat and Skoda applications...' and goes on to list all the major manufacturers...

Hope this helps.

This is the problem !!!

No mention of the illusive 503.01 spec.

Very strange, surely any full synthetic oil preferably a 0w 30 or 40 should really suffice.
What oil originally is in the engine from Seat Sport, from the threads it seems like Synta silver, so what do you think of that !
Hmmm confused or what???

Vern,
My LCR is booked in for its first service next friday, consisdering i have only done 3200 miles to date and that my car has recently had the APR treatment should i supply my own 503.01 fully syn oil or should i let my dealer put the regular semi syn 10-40 back in to complete the running in proccess. I'm a little concerned that the extra power may require the fully syn oil. Your advice will be appreciated.

Yep certainly was,
good to talk to you, am well impressed with the software, money well spent. I'm running a mixed tank of ron 95 & Ron98 at he mo so haven't had chance to use the 98 program yet, but 95 prog is plenty fast enough so far. Has improved on an already good car.

 Hi

Just seen this on the motorworld website
Might give it a go as it is 503.01 VW spec as required.

I would feel quite confident with Carlube as i have already used Triple R
fully synthetic 5W40 for my LCR now and all my previous cars etc.

http://www.motor-world.co.uk/show_prod.php?prod_id=8210

Again though these 503.01 oils are only for extended service intervals.
Arent they ???

The LCR is not on extended service intervals.

All very confusing i feel.
