because they are more likely to be used for motorway driving.

:wtf: Sorry - I can't see why that's the case! You don't buy a petrol to drive on A roads and a derv for motorways!!

The reasoning behind the 6 speed box on the dervs (IMO) is obvious - it's to make the most of the narrow power band the engine has - allowing the diesel to make similar progress as the petrol

put the diesel cupra gear box onto the petrol cupra lol you would be changing gears all the time . I think this would make the petrol cupra acelerate quicker but you would lose top end speed. has anyone tried it

I think it would be the other way round - the top speed of the diesel is almost the same as the petrol but achieved at relatively low revs due to the nature of the engine - the gearing is very long. If you were to fit the diesel box to a petrol top end would increase due to the extra revs available but you'd lose acceleration due to the long gearing.

short answer is that they don't need a 6 speed, they have a very good wide power band

6 speed boxes tend to be fitted to cars with a narrow power band like tdi's or high revving vvti petrols

I don’t agree my leon has 6 speed box and that has a wide power band, also I think they moved back to the 16v because you can put in larger cams and valves in, compared to the 20v T too help it flow better at high rev's,

I ultimately think that there is not just one deciding factor to put in a 6 speed or 5 speed box,

Things like:
Vehicle power
Vehicle weight
Vehicle torque delivery
Engine characteristics
Top speed wanted
Handling
Drivability
Cost

are just a few and to say which would be the best I guess that depends on the above.

^^^^^^^ then you have the best of both worlds and good for you, you chose a good car

do you know of an 8 valve normally aspirated petrol car with a 6 speed box ?

as said before the 20vt cupra engine does very well with 5, they did want to sell some diesel ones so they held back a bit on the 20vt heehee

Yeah definately the other way round.

I know if a Fiat Punto JTD revved upto 7k you'd be doing 223 mph.

what about the old gti6 was that 8v or 16v i cant remember but as you say i never had any issues with the beeza being 5 speed I think it was well suited to the car.
