Window Wiper Question

The long wet day are definitely here to stay, and with that I have noticed something strange. soooo.


Car on, wipers on (doesn't matter what speed) Turn car off, wipers return to full upright position.

Start car again. When are the wipers meant to start working again ???

It seems mine don't work until you move the wiper stalk, or the speed adjuster.


Is this normal, or am I cracking up ?????

Either start them yourself or when you move off they start automatically

I think I may have a fault then. Mine dont start again when moving. Tested this yesterday up to 50mph. Nothing.

Not sure it is a fault m8, mine are the same. If you turn the car off with the wipers in any of the on positions (auto/intermittent, normal, fast) the wipers dont start again when you restart the car until you move the wiper switch to a different position (or change the intermittent speed/rain sensitivity switch).

Its intended to be that way I believe, so that if you park up at night and leave the wiper switch in the on position, come down in the morning and the wipers are frozen to the screen with frost or snow it doesn't try to move them as soon as you start the car (most people start the car first then get on with the defrosting of the windows afterwards). It also means that if it was raining when you parked up, but is dry when you start off again the wipers don't do a screeching sweep of a dry screen when you start the car, quickly ruining your wiper blades.

I could be wrong (which would mean that you and I have an identical fault) but that's what I have always assumed (and I quite like it that way).

Mine are the same - and i agree with what you have written ... or we are both wrong and have faulty cars!.

Coggie, does yours have rain sensing wipers? Just wondered if the behavior was different if you do/don't have rain sensor? Yours seem to be the only ones that do what you describe?

was just wondering the same. mine restart themselves, and i do have the convenience pack.

No, plain ordinary wipers, MY07 car with no convenience pack.

The only other thing I've noticed is if you park the wipers at the bottom of the screen just after turning the engine off, they will return to their park position as soon as you move forward after restarting, before you've even come off the clutch.

Whereas if they parked in their normal position, and left on as i described before, they will only start working again once you hit 4-5ish mph.

Mine are the same - pain in the arse!!

My front ones behave the same way, however, the back wiper does start moving again when i re-start the engine - it's just the front wipers that don't start until i move the switch.

I also thought this is a feature rather than a bug
