Emission Control System Warning light

This light came on yesterday the car has recently only done short journeys down the town and back only a mile or so,could it be that it just needs a good run to clean it out or is it a trip to the dealers for a warranty job to find out the problem?any ideas?. The car is a 1.4 Formula Sport 4 month old with 1000 mile on the clock. Thanks

sounds like a plan if the light has now gone off

give it a good run and see before you waste your time at the stealers, can't do any harm

if the light will not go out then off to the stealers you go

My parents have this on their 2002 1.4. Its been going on and off every few months for a year or so but runs fine. They're in Spain so I can't put vag-com on it unfortunately and don't recommened them taking it to a dodgy Spanish garage.

Update

Gave the car a good run this morning and what do you Know the Emission Control System Warning light went out ,looks like it comes on if you do a lot of short journeys, obviously not getting warmed up enough,anyway a least it will save a trip to the dealers, a round trip of 100 miles!

ive jus had the emission control system warning light com'on too.

i dont't think a good run out will do the same for me, as it was on the way back from a 3 hour drive and i've already clocked up 18,500 miles since september


I have a powerflow decat which has been on for like 15,000 miles and this light hasn't come on b4.

so....whats people think????

maff or lambda sensor possibly???

funny enought my 1.4 sport did same thing today.. took it for 40min drive tho and it went off and is running fine, i just came back from holiday so car was sitting there for week .. but may contact stealers soon about it but will keep eye on it..

I've had the same on my 2007 Leon Cupra 240ps. Less than a year old and I do short journeys to work. every time it comes on it was when accelerating hard, then it would flash every 2 seconds and go off shortly after. It could last 5 minutes or so and it seems to come on at random times. i did get the dealer to look at it because they were looking at a rattle anyway, and they said they couldn't find a problem. should i trust this? it does say in the manual that it can damage the cat if there is an ECS problem?

is it worth taking it back in again? I only bought it 2 months ago! i'd be keen to hear from anybody else who has had the same problem on their Leon. Incidently. I have a friend who has had the same intermittent problem with her 2LTFSi Golf.

decat fcuks up small petrol engines

thanks for your help. I read that thread but i'm sorry I didn't quite understand. does the problem mean my catalytic convertor is broken and i need to get it back to the garage?
