Seems like my turbo is on its way out - started making the 'police siren' noise and having searched this site that indicates that the bearings are most likely shot. It still drives well but I don't want to ignore it and wait till it breaks something else.
What are my options?
Where do people recommend buying a reconditioned/new turbo?
What sort of price am I looking at? I could probably fit it myself, is it fairly easy? Any guides?
What turbo will it have- K03 and K04 mentioned - either of those?
Thanks in advance....
Rich

Hi mate. You can get a recon turbo (Garrett KO3) from £295 to £495 depending on condition of yours as its an exchange. A brand new unit for £595. Try CR turbo's. I,ve been quoted £950 + VAT fitted so if you can do it yourself then come do mine after:lol:

your in the exact same position that i was in some months back.

The turbo fitted is a VNT-17, as far as i know the KO turbos were fitted to petrols not diesel*.

Turbo Dynamics, CR Turbos, Turbo Technics to name a few can "hybrid" your turbo. This is a good option if you want more power, but bare in mind you'll need a remap to suit.
I purchased mine from Turbo Technics for £430ish in VAT. You'll have to send them your old unit, so removing/re-fitting shouldn't cost more than £250, should include an oil change too. (cant remember what i paid exactly).

Any of the mentioned companies can rebuild your turbo to factory spec if you don't want to shell out more on a remap.

Thanks for the replies guys, appreciated. Hmmmm hybrid sounds tempting, what sort of power are you getting with that and a remap then?

I got my hybrid from turbo tecs as volvic has.
I currently have 215hp and 391lbft.
Bear in mind going hybrid means an uprated clutch which fitted will be approx £650.

Hey black04tdi,

try to work out how to pm you but ended up befriending you!

I just wanted to know how you resolved your issue. I am in the same boat as you were.

Dont want to go to the hybrid just want to oem.

I've just replaced the turbo on my PD140 with a CR Turbo's hybrid. It cost a little extra but worth it I think.

CR and Turbo Technics were about the same at £500ish plus the vat, but they want your old unit back within 10 or 14 days, or they will charge you some extra. :(

Got a quote from Seat for a recon unit and it was something like £800.

Hi Fish,

Thanks for the reply. It is very appreciated as it's a frustrating time as its gonna be costly!

Couple more questions for you if you dont mind.!

I take it the £500 plus vat isnt fitted? I presume it isnt as you mention sending the unit back.

If so did you fit yours and I assume this is relatively straight forward, unbolt, bolt back on. Does it come out from the bottom or from the top. Any pointers would be appreciated.

How did you fully diagnose it was gone? I'm having the common police siren noise. I'm taking a butchers tomorrow by removing the pipework and checking play in the impella.
Did you have a leak test. I need to be 100% its the turbo.

The hybrid option. I take it you had a remap. was that it or you do other work such as clutch?

As for SEAT. they can take run and jump. I look at their servicing costs as the local dealers and I'm disguted.

Many thanks

Blue, no that price wasn't fitted as I felt comfortable doing it myself. There were a couple of bits I wasnt sure about (main one being the oil feed line), but I managed. Couple of naughty words in the process. ;)

With mine being the MK2 Leon I removed the DP and slide it out down the tunnel over the frame. Bit tight but there is a little sheilding that might now have a slight dent.

I diagnosed the fault as the car went bang. The inlet blades didnt show any sign of damage, yet the rear was cleanly snapped off.

My turbo was making a lot of noise, but the VNT was sticking and must have stuck in the end. :(

Yes I have a map and a Miltek complete system, although I know I need to get the map re-checked/modified for the new turbo.

The parts needed I sourced from Dave at Sere's, this covered the manifold gasket, new nuts, exhaust gasket and oil feed line. Better pricing than my local dealer thats for sure.

Mine took a little extra time as I was limited with space under the car, but if you can get it high enough then it should take around 1/2 to 3/4's of a day. IMO

Turbo

My turbo has been noticably making the noise you call the "police siren" noise for almost 25k now, Its still running smoothly, does 120 miles a day religiously, and pulls like a train!....

whats all this about wear and worrying that its nackered? I am going for a remap next month after just fitting my sachs clutch too!!

It aint supposed to be making that noise! I aint puttin up with that. I figure if it goes then it will be even more money. I am already frustrated at the costs i'm facing.

Popped into a diesel specialist today. The result was that the mechanic diagnosed that there was a small amount of play. The turbo is on its way out. He thinks that the turbo is suffering from lack of oil being fed to it. He recommends that he drops the sump and checks the oil feed (i cant remember its correct name)

Price including the recon turbo £918 BOOM

or

new turbo £1200 BOOM

thats is life. Suppose if the motor has only done 63k its worth seeing it as an investment grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I've heard a few of these making various noises. I think it's different with the VNT turbos, don't necessarily mean it's about to pop.
The siren noise on a traditional wastegate turbo usually means death by oil in the exhaust though :p

I had mine replaced after i had put up with the police siren noise for about 8k miles because it started using oil, not a lot but more than it had for the previous 60k miles I'd done and was becoming smokey.

I had a recon one put on which was supplied and fit bu Volksparts and including fitting/VAT cost me £680 which I thought was reasonable. Another local garage (I won't name them but it is mentioned by someone above) quoted me "£1200 minimum but could be +£200 more depending on other issues". I went in pretending I knew nothing about cars/turbos and was fed complete bollix by them...be warned about who you get to do the work. Paying more does not mean a better job, just means your being ripped off ;)

New turbo's now done 15k with no issues. Cars now on 81k. I bought it new and remapped it with 6k on the clock :)
