Yeah, also vag com can register the coolant temp, and yu can log it to see if it fluctuates.

Oh great, I just haven't got time now to do it myself but before I take it in I would much rather know roughly where the problem is - this should be a good way to gauge it

Well I drove home and all the way home it said 1c - the temp gauge did its usual dance

Sorry.....didnt realise there was 2 pages, so read the first page then thought id comment. No sorry mines not for sale.....i kerp getting a fault light due to a dodgy cts....but seeing as its common for the sensor / stat to fail i thought id do a bit of research.

Out of interest what does your climate control read? If you press the recirc button then the up arrow(to select top vents) at the same time the screen should read 1.....then press temp up button to read 51 then press recirc button to select 51 it should then read the coolant temp. I think lee69 has a guide on how to do this. Im wondering if you have tried everything else you may have a faulty unit on dash? Possibly moisture from various leaks on these cars such as fuse pannel in scuttle.

Thanks for the heads up. I spoke with Lee and I also drove home and it stayed on 1c

You only seen the 1c you need to do more

You should see a 1c. Press the temperature up ("+") or down ("-") buttons to select a code number. Then press the recirculation button again. The value should display. Press the temperature up or down button again to display another code.

Oh yeah, that document you sent me the link for. I will have another quick look and set it right

Once you have selected 51 you should then see a number...which will go up to and stay at 90....mine says 90 but the dash gauge fluctuates....its throwing up a cts fault so i imagine the 2 sensors within it are reading different.

Did you use temp up to 51 then press the recirc button to enter 51?

Cheers for your help you two.

I drove it and it hit 90 and stayed at 90 on the climatronic when the dial danced about. As per usual the gauge sorted itself out. I'd have quite liked it to have gone back down again so I could truly see the issue again but you can't always get what you want! So this means its the gauge then I presume but could still be the wiring? So many variables!

As far as i understand the cts is a 2 in 1...one part tells the ecu/ climatronic (thats where you were reading 90c) and the other part of the sensor tells the dash what to display.....it may be that the part of the sensor that supplys the dash is faulty....or the dash itself, i imagine it would be cheaper to try a genuine cts.....but check the plugs etc first. Apart from that i dont know much more....all i know is what iv read on here (iv read a lot haha)

That's very helpful cheers. Seems like I need to look at the cts still as a cheap start point and judging by Lee's comment you hit the nail on the head. As far as I can determine I need to bite the bullet and put a new genuine cts in. Just need to find a way to catch the coolant that comes out and put it back in because as I said before I've no idea what type they used but quite sure it wasn't G12

I went to ecp to get some g12 for when i do mine......he said g12 has been replaced by g13 the purple stuff.....he said its compatible with the pink/orange stuff. I hope it is!!
