Yeah a real funny guy. He put a built M5 turbocharged engine in that old Volvo... 700+ at the wheels.

Just on the front axle mate. Never had grip problems on the rear of this car. Ever. I'll start off with slicks front and street tires rear. Then Dot tires rear if it becomes too hairy

They measure 20cm from edge to edge where they attach to the rims where my old 235/40/18 measure 21cm so they will fit for sure. I guess they are equivalent to the oem 225/40/18

Be very interested to hear how you get on with slicks on the front and treaded on rear as I have considered doing that on the track.You mention Dot tyres on rear if it becomes too hairy, what exactly are Dot tyres? are they somewhere between a slick and normal street/treaded tyre?
in theory, if i'm not completely wrong:
slick 210/650-18 is equivalent size something like road 210/45-18
road 225/40-18 is equivalent size something like slick 225/635-18
road 235/40-18 is equivalent size something like slick 235/645-18
this is theory.

You're off by a bit:
210/650R18 = 225/40R18. They have both approx 20cm from rim edge to rim edge
the "width" size of the tyre has nothing to do with the tyre width at the rim, its only the width of the tyre. and even then the "width" size of the tyre is not necessarily the same if you measure the contact area of the tyre to the road.
if you look at road tyre sizes and racing tyre sizes the only difference in theory should be the height.
road size 225/40-18
mm width / percent height - rim size in inches
width: 225mm
height: 90mm equivalent to 637mm complete tyre height
rim size: 18"
racing size 210/650-18
mm width / mm height complete tyre - rim size in inches
width: 210mm
height: 96mm equivalent to 650mm complete tyre height
rim size: 18"
so the 210/650-18 is only a little bit higher then your 235/40-18 tyres, and some what higher then 225/40-18 tyres. so you get more topspeed in top gear/max rev.
not saying that you have the wrong size or anything only trying to explain the theory and numbers on paper.

You are incorrect Alan. I measured them using this:
JUST for you I measured the slicks vs my 235/40R18's. Rim edge to rim edge in reference to rim fit is the only with I care about: Slicks 20cm, 235's 21cm.
Height: Slicks 8.8cm and 235's 9cm.
Now if you still are not happy I suggest you contact the manufacturer of the tires and complaint to them. Good luck.
For all intents and purposes: 210/650R18 = 225/40R18
