This does help! The way I see it, it looks like it's never been plugged into anything, I can't find anything that looks like it's wanting a plug, and I've never had any engine issues, lights or anything come up in VCDS about it. It's probably been like that the whole fourteen years I've owned the car and hasn't been causing any trouble, so I'm just going to leave it well alone. Not got that on mine
So it's been a week since putting in the new sensor and everything seems to be working fine. No long drives yet, but the times I've taken the car out, it's taken a lot longer for the gauge to say it's up to temperature. After filling the expansion tank, I've had to add maybe 500ml, but I think that's more to do with the pipes being emptied and a few air pockets sorting themselves out rather than a leak. I've had a feel around the sensor and I don't think there's anything leaking, so I'll check it tomorrow to make sure and to put a last little bit of coolant in - it's currently just below the minimum. I'll keep an eye on it when I do a longer drive at Christmas.
Sadly, the car might be up for sale soon, as I'm probably going to have to go down the petrol route. I don't drive far enough to get the benefit of the diesel and it sounds like there's going to be a clean air zone in the city soon enough, so if anyone's interested, get in touch. The bonnet and front bumper need the paint corrected, but you all know how much I've loved this car and how much work I've done on it.
And if anyone sees an A5 coupe for a reasonable price...
