Check charge air cooler.

Common issue where coolant leaks into there
Hi,

How does one check the charge cooler? I'm assuming charge cooler is also called the intercooler?

And would the charge cooler being messed up cause my symptoms that I have listed above? Thanks for your help and input! Greatly appreciated!

The charge air cooler is a coolant to air coolant unit fitted to the front of the engine, intergrated within the inlet manifold. The EA.288 diesel engines don't use an air to air intercooler.

To check, you need to remove the intake air temp sensor and put a camera inside the manifold. If it's failed then there will be obvious signs of coolant present.

Testing the main coolant pump and its electronic shroud is pretty easy. Get the car up to temp i mean really up to temp not just 90 on the gauge.

Get the bonnet up and have someone keep the revs at a stable 2000rpm, look at the thin return pipe going back into the coolant tank. If your not seeing flow into the tank then you may a impeller and the shroud sticking issues. The shroud would usually fail open though. But impellers do come loose on the shaft.

I will say if either of the above were true id expect some over heating issues.

Gurgling behind the dash seems more like an air lock issue. If this was my car the first thing is do would be a coolant flush and id refill the coolant via vacuum filling. Its the only way for the home mechanic to ensure the system is filled without introducing air.
Hi,

Would I do this with the expansion tank cap on or off?

Also when I have seen recently at times, after little bit of driving I checked for leaks or coolant being forced out, I have seen that the coolant level in the expansion tank has risen when the car is hot. Does this mean that water pump is working?

Cap on, you should be able to see a small flow back in to the tank where the return pipe fixes to the coolant tank. Obviously look for colour at that point.

Hot water expands so you will see the level rise slightly compared to looking at the tank cold.

Presume this is the air sensor to remove?
I looks like is has a copper washer - do you find these re-seal ok, or do you fit a new copper washer?

Yes, that's the one. They re-seal fine

Guess what i'll be changing over Christmas 😭
Found some water using my borescope - so brought a new charge air cooler.
I have had a very slow coolant loss, which I was thinking could be my charge air cooler or EGR cooler.

Hi all.

Hope you all had a good start to the new year.

A little update on this issue.

I have gotten the heater matrix changed, expansion tank changed and the expansion tank cap changed. The mechanic ran the car up to temp multiple times. The engine isn't running higher than operating temp. I have driven the car and it is working perfectly fine. No issues there.

However... The water gurgling/sloshing noise is still there, although it has reduced now since the heater matrix changed.

When I just turn the ignition on and don't turn the car on I can hear the water running. I went underneath the car to do my oil change and I heard that the noise was coming from the heater support auxiliary pump. The exact same noise that I hear from behind my vents/dash.

I think my heater support pump has gone bad or going bad and this is just the start. Anyone else had issues with heater support pump before? Mind you my car is 12 years old now. Thanks.

There is 2 pumps the one near the oil filter housing that's for the charge cooler circuit then there is one behind the sump towards the timing selt side, that does the matrix circuit..

Hi guys,

Need a bit of help.
I need the part number (either OEN or the part number itself) for the auxiliary water pump for the heater which is next to the oil sump plug.

If anyone can comment on this post it will be greatly appreciated. My car is a Seat Leon FR MK3 184 bhp Diesel.

Hi,

As I have two auxiliary pumps, one for the intercooler/charge cooler and one for the heater support pump, are they both the same?

If they are the same then I have replaced the charge cooler pump not so long ago, I will just buy another one using the same part number.

Thanks for your help and input so far.

No they are different pumps different part numbers, the one near the oil filter has a part metal housing the one at the rear of the sump is all plastic.

You can collect the part numbers yourself as they are printed on the pumps as with most parts.

The charge cooler pump is the one near the oil filter.

Yes indeed, that is what I thought as well. Unfortunately all the information on the heater support pump has been rubbed out/too faded to make out the part number or OEN.

That's why I asked on this thread and my own thread.

And the number which you posted is for the charge cooler pump, I have already replaced that.

I will looked around but I hope that someone here knows the part number for the heater support pump for my car.
