130 tdi slow start when warm

got a seat ibiza 130 tdi sport..

its fitted with the asz engine..

now when its cold.it starts fine..run the car about and when its up to temp,and if i shut the engine off,it takes awhile to start

if i use the car for a few min,from cold it will start fine.

its just when its hot,that its becoming a pig...it does start..but you can crank it for about 5 or so secs before it fires.

go no other issues,no lights up..nothing.

could it be glow plugs..?

someone on edition 38 mentioned it could be starter motor related

any help please

It shouldn't take 5 seconds to crank, is it really that long or just feels it?

People always moan about the pd130's slow hot start. Some people have cleaned up/replaced the battery terminals and evidently that's fixed it. I think it's just their nature

it feels longer..but ive timed one of them at around 5 seconds.

it never use to do it..never had the prob on my golf or bora 130 tdi's

I changed the coolant temp sensor to start with was an improvement but not fully cured it

Then I need to replace the battery anyway later on in the year and that sorted it out not had the problem once in the last six

Also read some where that when the engine is warm it needs x amount of rpm before it will start and a week battery/starter motor it can't turn the engine over fast enough to reach the required rpm

ive replaced the temp sensor earlier this year with a vw one..so i dont think its that.

but someone said about the starter..

if it was a battery..why would it do it when warm..surley when warm it would have had a good charge

This fault is common across the VAG range and commonly down to the starter breaking down when hot. There is a modification that can be done in the software to overcome this, I've done a few and it works very well, but this is just a way to mask the actual issue.

i should have said..when i try start it when warm.it turns over ok.just doesnt seem to fire.

it doesnt turn over any slower..well not that i can tell.,compared to when cold

Temp sensor.

There is more than one temp sensor. I think the fuel temp sensor going faulty causes poor warm starting.



Coolant temp sensor, fuel temp sensor, ehaust gas temp sensor, inlet temp sensor? And probably more too

Had the same issue before I replaced battery. New battery fitted, starts on the first crank. I also cleaned the earth terminal so that may have helped as well

tried a mates newish battery..and it starts alot better..

off to tps for a new one me thinks

People here seem to think it's related to cam position sensor... Any mileage to that idea?

brand new 72a battery from tps..£53..not bad at all.

Was going to say battery, my old Octavia TDI did this when I bought it, always started perfectly from cold but it would take a while to fire when warm. It was a bit embarrassing at petrol stations!

Turned out that it had the wrong rating of battery on it. New, correct one fitted and it was spot on.

I think the reason it didn't have the problem from cold is because when its cold the glow plugs would work to aid starting and they masked the problem. But when warm, the glow plugs didn't work, thus relying on the battery. Could be all wrong but its my theory!
