hi, i have a 2.0l 8v cupra n the abs light goes on n off intermitantly, i know there are two sensors at the front n im guessing it could just be a loose connection. However earlier on (whilst the abs light was off) i was braking in this lovely english weather and it felt like the abs kicked in, but then the pedal whent hard as if i had pumped it with the engine off, then the abs light came on n the pedal relased itself, this happened simultaneously. Any other reasons apart from a loose connection for the abs light coming on? ?!

Telford ay it...
You need to get the fault codes read to give you an idea whats wrong. Many people have problems with ABS, me included until recently.....touch wood :)

Thanks for the quick reply, wat was your issue with it? Im guessing you mean through the diagnostics port or is there a diagnostics u can do with a combination of buttons before u start the car like some fords?

You need to hook up it via the port, VAGcom's a cracking tool if you can get hold of a lead or find someone local to scan it for you. Mine was crud in one of the front trigger wheels and a connection to a rear sensor.

I hear of this alot on the 16v's but not so much on the 8v..

Ive had 2 valvers with this problem. On my last i had countless sensors replaced and large sections of wiring replaced and in the end i just use to irnore the light. It came on once when OllieL slammed my car door. Only to go off again when i drove off up the road.

I read in PVW once a few months back that golf mk3 16v's also have a ABS light problem but that is caused by some part i forget the name off but to buy the part off VW would cost more that most of us spent to buy our cars.....

The bit that you speak off when the pedal goes all hard is exactly the same as what happened to me. Normally only at low speeds. normally followed by a metal on metal sound. Once my local VW specialist had had it for 3 days and replaced sections of the wiring the problem seemed to clear up but i was still left with a flash happy light....i'd have brand new ABS sensors put on only for the VAG com to tell me they were faulty minutes later. Wiring was never the Spanish's strong point.

solenoids in the valve body clog/jam up but to be honest it's only common as too many people ignore proper brake fluid flash and change routines but they are pretty strandard and easy to get, in fact my whole abs block is made up of toledo/octavia parts for about £30 a piece

rear wiring NSR especially suffers as the heat from the exhaust seems to dry/break the wires even more so with aftermarket rear boxes , if you have an issues there cut the loom out to the rear seat and change the whole thing

Hiya!

Although mines a 16v, it may be worth a try....

I had issue with my light, it would very rarely light up on start up. was like it since i bought it. i just assumed it was a wiring fault or something, never really paid attention to it.

Then last weekend i was in a 'if its there it should be working' mood, so pulled the dash out to test power/continuity etc. Turns out the bulb had just about gone, and was only just making contact, so very rarley worked, along with handbrake, front fog, dipped lights and low fuel warning bulbs! i didnt even know they were all meant to light up. Replaced all the bulbs, now i have a christmas tree worthy set of lights!

Interestingly, it passed the mot with none of these lights working. I thought it should have failed without the abs one?

Anyways, ramble over! If the light aint working, try the bulb!

ok to bring this topic back to life, my handbrake light has now joined the show of lights lit up on my dash board ( i have to keep it fueled now because it just blinds me when that comes on with the rest ) anyway i have checked both the fluid and handbrake sensors and they both work fine, so its neither of them. I found this bit of information out however:
"A seroius Abs fault - the later Abs system took over the task of rear brake proportioning (there's no valve fitted to the rear axle beam). The handbrake lamps' circuit is completed in this case by some extra circuitry in the airbag/Abs/trailer warning lamp module. The handbook for later cars states that with the Abs and handbrake lamps steadily lit, a risk of rear wheel lock-up is present."

So anybody know what to do? fit the valves and bypass the module? get rid of the abs? im stuck!

Thanks,

Chris
