Bets are on the fuse box too, luvres may have aided it spreading due to the increased oxygen, however cant see it causing that much more.

Although it looks bad I wouldnt go through the insurance, a few new bits (£100/150 worth of parts), some time cleaning, a bit of soilder and fresh wire and it'll be better than before.

what caused it? SEAT's shite fuse panel on top of the battery... which allows the fan fuse to melt... likely culprit maybe

You might have hit the nail on the head there Bill, it most likely looks like the fire started it that place, i still had that stupid insulation stauff around the battery and the sound deffining was still connected to the bonnet, as ofr water coming in throught the vents ive had this bonnet done like this for well over a year now and never seen any problems even with washing. One of the blokes with a bucket of water even put a load through the vent before i got the bonnet open.

But now Bill has said this i think this could be a cause, melting fuse-battery insulation-battery-bonnet sound deffining, in my eyes those things look very conbustable.

Just want to say thank you everyone for all there comments, seeing this happen scared the life out of me to be honest, seeing flames in your engine bay, i never wanna see that again.

But hopefully by posting on here people can have an idea what can happen to your car so very unexpectedly, if i was on the motorway on my way to work this would have been the end of my cupra.

Hmm, good time to invest in a fire extinguisher! (Well before would have been better) but now we can see what could happen!

What are you looking at,
New maf?
Wiring
Header tank
and paint on the bonnet.

Probably looking at around £300, at a guess, but not going through the insurance should save you some money.

Yeah - when you figure in your no claims (if you have any) and the effect on having claimed on your next premium it may well work out cheaper to DIY it.

I think I'm going to get me a little fire extinguisher for in the boot now!

I would have an "official" moan to SEAT UK on this. It is a fire hazard and their own records for know warranty repairs on this part will confirm this is a widespread problem.
If a vacuum pipe for servo is classed as a "recall" then so should this part as it can result in an engine fire.
