 I can't get to you  lol good find tho mate I think I'll be getting ne one of them :)

Phil by any chance do you still have part no as vagcat dint seem to be working for me? Do they all use the same part number throughout the 1.8t range

Thankyou

IIRC all the electronic ones are the same (1.8t) you just need to make sure its got the plug on it. One is for ther vvt and the other is for normal cams.

I no this is an old post but i am hoping i get a reply please! I have a leon cupra 180 AUQ. The last week or so it has been making a very strange rattling noise on cold start that lasts two seconds. It only does this first thing in the morning. Should i be concerned?

Yea the sound is coming from the engine.i recorded it but not sure whow to upload videos. It basicly when the car first starts staight away like compresion tapping or rattle it only lasts for two seconds and then the car is fine the rest of the day. Only happens first thing. realy weird.

They usually only do it first thing as the engine is cold and all of the oil drops to the bottom of the engine, when the tensioner is changed they should change the oil pump and pick up pipe and also clean or replace the oil strainer as these items get very clogged up and don't deliver oil to the top of the engine straight away hence the rattle.

Thats intresting has it always done it since you have owned it.? Becouse this has only started last couple weeks on mine.since changing my oil.(it only happens if the cars been stood for 12 hours or more.)i alsohad a look at cam belt today.the garadge i bought it from said thay had chamged it. And provided recipts for the parts.bt it looks worn like its been rubbing on somerhing.and also was sat to the side of the cogs by maybe 1cm. Is this normal?

Hi all,

New on here as I have a bit of a problem...

In short for the last 3 months my 2001 Seat Leon Cupra ( 180) has started rattling on startup. Muffled when cold with more of a whir like a pully isnt happy about being turned and much more clattery when warm. The hotter the louder the clatter. Only for a few seconds on startup and it stops as soon as you rev is slightly. After the first garage... replaced the starter motor - still same noise, then alternator pulley and tensioner - still same noise... I took it to a specialist ( independent) who at first had the same issue identifying the problem but eventually diagnosed it with a failed Camshaft Variable adjuster? When I asked them to explain they said it was a tensioner attached to the Cam Chain that adjusted in line with timing etc. Im not a mechanic so said ok how much...
£1'126... including vat. My only issue with this is that surely if the tensioner had failed it would do it all the time? and I also thought the cam was belt driven on these? Anyway dont know if anyone can help with any advice but Im reluctant to spend such and amount of money on a fault I have never heard of particularly when at the last service I had the cambelt done ( 60k) water pump etc etc along with the coil packs that set me back £800 4 months ago which need doing again as part of the same job?

My sister and dad both have different Audi's with the same engine and theres are well in 3 figures mileage wise with no issues...

Its a plastic tensioner between the two camshafts that wear over time, they are similar to the VR6 tensioner material if not the same.. I had to semi remove the tensioner when doing the VVT seal on mine.. The tensioner completely came out on my sisters A3 1.8t when i did the VVT type seal as no VVT, had to completely re-time engine there after.. Both cars have no oil leaks onto gearbox now ;) Where are you based btw?

Here are some pics of VR6 tensioners to give you idea of wear, you can just make out the score lines in the plastic.

If i can find pics of a worn 20vt tensioner il post them up.

Im based near tauton buddy.nt sure if its just becouse its only just started happening. Bt it never happens when warm ever!..and i dont need to rev the car to get rid of the noise.sound goes on its own automaticly.wil only happen first thing in the morning for no more than two seconds.and then it wont happen again unless the car is stood for more than 12 hours.

If you come by Leicester anytime then i can fit if you get stuck ;) This is the only pic i have when i was fitting the gaskets for VVT, i got carried away with work and had oily hands so didnt take any other pics lol

Thats realy good of you to offer chap thank you. But leicester would be quite a treck for me 176 miles each way. Do you have any idea on whow much id be looking at for parts vvt gasket etc. And whow much a garadge may charge for this? I had a mechanic tel me a couple months ago that i had an oil leak going down onto the gearbox. So i recon this wil be worth a go.
