Hi guys,

I have been looking around for car ramps so I can do an oil change on my car and have plenty of room under the car, I have found some sealey car ramps but these only allow a width of 210mm, my tyres are more then this.

Does anyone know where I can get some ramps that will allow for my fat tyres, any places where they sell these would be good.

Halfords ramps are too small, thanks

sorry bud, 225, just measured these and it works out to be over 210mm as the quoted max tyre width.

I dont have any tyres with the protective rim on them, already scraped my new wheels, ouch!!!

jason gets tape measure and heads for the shed.

my ramps are 7 inch wide(180mm)
my tyres are 225/45/17,which are slightly wider than the ramp.i haven't had any probs with mine going on and off the ramp.

you could invest in a pelle pump for a bit more £££ and suck the oil through the dipstick, and on my octavia i can reach down and whip off the oil filter.i do spill a bit,but with rags and newspaper i can soak that up pretty easily. this saves removing engine under tray ;).not sure how you'd get on with yours though.

there should be two ickle triangle indents on your sills, this is for the scissor jack that you really shouldn't use(its dangerously ****).i jack mine on something more substantial on the underside of the car, something not made of pressed steel ;)

jason, did you measure your car ramps bud?

I did want car ramps really as drive on drive off, easy, might have to get some axle stands and use a trolley jack, where would I jack it up on the trolley jack if I did it this way, cheers

editted post #4 so that it makes sense:redface:
it would be wrong of me to suggest where you should lift your pride and joy,but I sometimes use the sills(lazy or in a hurry),as they are bent from previous owner jacking there,if you love your car then don't jack here, jack it somewhere more solid.if in doubt lower the car and try another point.saftey first

I might just bite the bullet and get the 210mm wide ramps if you dont have any probs with your 180mm ramps I should be o.k, I did see a chap selling ramps for £15 that were 15" about 300mm but dont know if he can get anymore, ill contact him just in case.

thanks for all your help jason & stu

i can't really see a problem,so long as you keep the centre of the tyre central on the ramp,i would imagine vehicle weight being more a of a worrying factor.
if you think about it, i have probably 90% of my tyre on the ramp with mininal overhang each side

yeh was thinking about this just now
(sorry my missus has just had a baby and we are both suffering from fatigue, big time!) the tyre wall is going to be bigger then the lip on the edge of the car ramp, no probs with the wheels. also as you say the small amount of overhang will not overbalance them.

sorted mate, thanks jason, top banana! ;)

heres how close my filter is jay.its a bit of a fiddle but easier and quicker than ramps/axle stands .

just something to consider, i borrowed my neighbours ramps for doing something(can't remember now!) and as ive had the car lowered the bumper hit the ramps way before the tyre did, so couldn't use them, dunno what its like on a standard car but i'd recon it'd still be close.

For jacking up and using axel stands, i jack the car up with the OE jack, and place the axel stands under a piece of 2" box section behind the jacking point.

Cheers

2" box section?

I have now found this out to be the case, ramps that were delivered to me today touch my bumper before the tyres even make it onto the ramps [:@] so to say the least I am a little peed off! I will now get some axel stands but I have had a look under the car and cant really see any jacking points near the sills? if anyone could give me some pointers of where the jacking points.where to put the axel stands on my car it would be much appreciated.

anyone want some brand new ramps give me a shout, I am now wandering if it would of just been easier to pay someone to do my oil change but I want to continue with this and not give up.
