Keep it (if finances allow) and hunt down an S2000 after summer(!) when they nosedive in price thanks to crap weather!

On a more serious note I think your wife is probably right and you may regret selling it. Nothing worse than that sinking feeling when you realise "oops, maybe that wasn't a good move".

Superb car. I'd keep it.

I think you might be right there.
I certainly wouldn't part with this beauty unless I get top dollar.
Maybe new year is the best time to pick up an S2000?

Possibly, although had a chat with one of my family today who was considering a Mazda MX5. A couple of dealers were saying they couldn't shift the ones they had and definitely wouldn't take anymore in unless they could get them for silly money.

They were gearing up for winter and looking to increase stock of 4WD vehicles.

s2000 is nice car but only take if its not you daily drive (seeing your cupra I guess it won't). Know a few S2000 owners and their stories are all the same, driving the s2000 through daily traffic gets really annoying since the motor with vtec activated is plain boring and not much better than a 1.4 toyota auris. With Vtec it's nice but 3 out of 4 went the compressor way since the car can take a lot more than the standard 200 bhp .

The S2000 has always been 240bhp whether it's the F20 or F22 engine... not bad for an N/A motor.

Yeah, it's 236 bhp I think, but having driven one I know what you mean.
Feels just like Civic Type R but with a lot more style...

And you are right, - it's not my daily ride, I have a company car.

My cupra hasn't been outside much, Lol !

I use mine as a daily all year round, winter tyres for the winter and hard top fitted .... 2 years later and i've still not found anything I want to replace it with. As for it being no better than an Auris, nothing is any better than an Auris when you're stuck in a commute but hey ... at least the roof folds down so you can top your tan up whilst everyone else cooks in their glass bubble :)

Don't forget that going down the FI route adds about 6k to the pricetag and will probably double your insurance :)

With congestion as it is, it's smiles per mile that count.

What age S2000 are you considering? There's quite a few gotchas to be wary of if you don't go in with your eyes open.

Well to be honest I saw one of those White Special Edition 100 series last weekend with just 3k on the clock. Stunning car, but the dealer wanted £22k !

Glass' guide only gives £18.5k for it even mint from a dealer.

But we did have a laugh !

22k lol ... for some stick on badges and slightly different trim / wheels ... no ta.

I would look privately for a garage queen that has had all its bushes greased, dry stored over winter and hasn't a blemish on the paint OR the interior. It won't cost you a penny more to buy but my god will it save you on maintenance costs.

Bear in mind the engines don't respond well to low oil ;-)

Cheers ! I hear the VTEC likes a drink of both types ?

I wonder how well I would enjoy the lack of low down grunt that the Cupra gives in spades though...

If you get a pre 2004 car then yes, it will like a sip of oil ... up to a litre every 1000 miles if you rag it ... the post 04 cars don't drink it.

Both drink fuel however and if you're using it for enjoyment ... i doubt you'll see more than 25 to the gallon, in my case 15 to 20mpg most of the time.

Post 2006 IIRC is the higher VED band too although if you want VSA then you'll be needing 2007 onwards. There are some engine 'issues' with some 2008/9 cars.

S2ki is very much worth a read if you're serious about ownership, especially the FAQ lists.

Thanks for this info, - do you know what the later models engine 'issues' are ?

Also, what is S2ki ? is it a sort of lads mag for those of us having a mid-life crisis ??? ;)

WHy? It's like any second hand car ( if you buy a used one thats out of original warranty) you have to be sure what you are getting into. If you want one from a dealer that's still within the OEM warranty then drive it and thrash it within the terms of that warranty.

You pays your money etc.

If it was my money, a nice low mile pre 2004 car with the sharper handling for about £6500 to £7000 would be my bet - you'd probably lose that trading in your current Cupra!!

Yes, you are probably spot on there. My Cupra is to all intents and purposes a new car, and the trade in offers I got were quite offensive (and laughable!).

The wife agrees with you, - she thinks we should keep mine and enjoy it more...she gets rather cross  with me when I announce that "The air temperature, density and RH are not right to run the Cupra this afternoon, - lets go out in your car, darling"! Lol !

She is seriously worried I am turning into Ron Dennis...

on S2k I fancied the later VSA versions though...

Learn to drive and you won't need VSA to save you .... treat it as a fair weather summer car and you'll never know you didn't have it.

Roof - look out for wear and tear.
Bushes - ask for proof they've been greased and adjusted.

If you're buying a good car from an enthusiast they'll tell you all about the niggles and how they've fixed them. A dealer will just try and mug you off and then let you fight the warranty system.

Avoid anything that has been CATC or D unless you can see pre and post repair pictures and you're going to keep the car indefinitely, you'll always struggle to sell it.

http://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/883345-fs-2002-uk-silverstone-63k-miles-12-months-mot-6-months-tax/ is a good one and would be worth making an offer on for some of the other bits that are there.

Dealers are the lowest of the low. If anyone knows a good dealer, please share.

You usually end up dealing with children who know little about engineering, the product, or even how to sell / negotiate. My experience with them recently has put me right off. They are patronising, ignorant and usually a bunch of ill-educated con men.

Thanks, for the great advice. A private buy is definitely looking most likely.

Dealers are only going to have < 3 year old stock and will price accordingly. You'll get raped on tradein value for yours and even more so on the price of the new one.

AVOID S20004U and Fourmarks cars at ALL costs!!!!!!!

I would suggest going to test drive a few dealer cars though, get a feel for how they drive - especially a newer one with no issues so that you can spot differences on older stuff.

I would also reccomend having a poke around the forums for localish owners, most are happy to talk about their cars and some may be happy to go with you to look at local cars or may well know of a good one for sale.

If you can pick up a good 2002/3 car ( one with a glass rear window or an aftermarket mohair hood) for £6500 with everything done in decent nick with < 50k miles on the clock over the winter, take care of it, don't do a huge mileage and i doubt you'll lose much.
