My front one went for a Burton tonight on a private runway at 110mph grrr. Do Tps do new ones? I'll buy 4 and get them painted when the car has the paint sorted.

Hi guys,

I was looking through my MK1 Leon Cupra manual and was interested in how the jack covers came off, so I un-clipped one. Problem is, I couldn't get it back on! (Wish I had read this thread prior to doing so!).

I wasn't sure about taking it to a random tyre fitter so I took it to my local Seat dealership on 05/07/16.
They told me the car would have to go on the ramp to re-attach it? I asked, well , how much would this cost? Amazingly they said there would be no charge! (Phew!). A rarity for a dealer! So I said thank you!

The car had been a while in the garage (20 mins or so) , so I went outside the showroom and looked into the garage, I saw the Seat technician using a heat gun on the jack cover? Anyway, I let him get on with it and went back into the showroom. 15 Minutes later (Times are approx, but seemed like an eternity), he told me my car was done. He told me had to put 2 self-tapping screws in the bottom to hold it in place, and that I would need to take them out to unclip the jack cover. Not what I expected but at least it holds it in place I guess. They would have been off before at some point in the cars history, why did they need to do this?

But I've only just noticed a problem; the fitment isn't that flush along the sideskirt! I wouldn't have minded screws being used but I thought it would still be flush? I'm wish I had just used some tape to hold it in place now instead of taking to dealers, won't water congregate in-between the gap in the jack cover and sideskirt?

They didn't tell me they were going to use screws, and I didn't know the fitment wouldn't be flush. I don't know whether to make a complaint or not? They did it for free, but do I have grounds?

Thanks.

Anybody got a pic of where they put a screw? I've got painted up 4 new covers.
Hi buddy, I’ve screwed all 4 of mine on underneath in the recess. I’ll try take a picture tommorow.
Whilst it was in the garage having tyres done a couple of years ago I did it whilst it was jacked up. It was jacked up high enough at the front for me to drill a small pilot hole in the back one then same on the front whilst the back was jacked up. A small 1/2 inch screw is all I’ve put in.
Just make sure you keep a small stubby screw driver in the spare wheel kit so you can take them if you get a flat.

You don’t need tape or screws if you Jack the wheel up and crawl under it.
Once jacked up you can see exactly where the cover slots in top and bottom.
The bottom has to go much further in than you think for it to click into place.
I be done this countless times and they sit perfectly. Adding screws and such like is just a pigs ear job, I would be fuming if Seat has put screws in to hold it.
Madness.
I’d take it back. Especially as he hasn’t made it flush.
Certainly not what Seat designed it to look like.

I don’t have a problem with mine I have to take them off every time I put the car on the ramp at work all I do is slot them in at the top and they swing into the skirt and give it a good firm tap with my hand and you hear that nice sound click as it clicks into place had the car over a year now and not lost one or had one come lose

.
completely agree. there is no need to go to such extremes. anyone needing to do this should not be doing anything on a car.

I have had one come off on my way home from work on the weekend had to call into a shop close to work and on my return to the car spotted my front drivers side one had come off so headed back towards work looking out for it and found it in the middle off the road all together and no marks on it not got round to refitting it yet as I need the bit off cable that holds it to the car

Had four new tyres fitted and the day after one flung off on the motorway and got scratched and ruined. And its a pig to reattach when you're in the middle of nowhere in a hurry so I had to snap the cable off and shove it in the boot.
