HID kits can be had for pennies these days. Get a hunt on eBay. Even if it's a cheaper kit from Japan, they're all the same at the end of the day.
ignore osram. philips, ring, check out autobulbsdirect.com they have a few own branded blue tinted bulbs combine them with some blue sidelight bulbs and it gives you a good xenon hid brightness and look but there is no substitute for xenon headlights they rock.
pm me i have an ebay seller i know of that sells really really good blue/white bulbs for £7.00 they are awesome, super bright and last ages and look the best i have seen i have had expensive £25-30 sets of osram and they are nothing on these ebay jobs!
If you want brightness, Osram Nightbreakers or Philips Xtreme Power.
If you want cosmetics, anything blue painted. Don't expect to see very much though. Any tinted bulb will put out less light than the same bulb with clear glass.

I had this debate with myself!
Osram nightbreakers and Philips bulbs came to about £25delivered or I could go £40 and get a Dianshop HID kit?
Went nightbreaker in the end! got the matching foglight bulbs now and the main beam bulbs came with free bluevision sidelight bulbs... quite happy for the driving I do. The Dual filament Nightbreakers have a sort of green/blue tinge on full beam I've noticed though!

1. HID bulbs on mirrors designed for filament bulbs suck big time, they project light wherever possible except where needed;
2. Best HID setup is a complete headlight with dedicated lens, even if it may be expensive;
3. Filament options for better lighting: Philips, either Premium, VisionPlus or Xtreme Power, if you want yellowish light, for rain driving, Night Vision if you need better light spread in dry weather. Blue Vision lights just like a Vision Plus but whiter.

The HID's are absolutely fine, creating a nice beam same as halogen just better light output. You'll find the problem of light projected everywhere to be by old style lights where all the beam direction is done by alignment in the glass of the headlight, not the reflective type like the Leon.
How do I know the beam is good? - I've got HID in mine as have many others without issue - including at MOT time as if they did that they would fail......

HIDs in a Leon with OEM lamps are fine, pass MOT without a problem, no flashing by other drivers and much safer than any upgraded bulb due to the increased light output. There is no substitute for HIDs, anoyne who tells your otherwise has never tried them in their Leon. Upgraded halogen bulbs £30, HID kit £40, isn't the choice obvious?
The HID's in my lenses project the light exactly where I need it. The garage seems to agree as they've passed the MOT too
My setup is:

and some ridiculously bright white leds for sidelights (brightest I've ever seen anywhere, got them from america on ebay, but can't find link now)
Only problem with my dipped beam is that although looks super cool and is ice white and looks just like HIDs... I can't see sh*t from them! So going to be upgrading to Ring Xenon Max soon and see how they are. Apparently the first +100% bulb.
Nightbreakers are brilliant for full beam vision.
And obviously the LED sidelights just look amazing!!!

You generally just put hids in dipped so you need an H7 kit for the standard headlight.

Yep - only in the dipped - H7.
I've got Osram nightbreakers in the headlights, look dull and yellow next to my 6000k HID's, plus I find I don't need the full as much coz the dipped is so much better

sorry i I'm being a thick but i don't want to order wrong ones.
if i order HID kit i will need H7 for dip then buy H1 standard bulbs for high beam.
were did you all manage to put electrics i.e ballast?

Yes H7 for dipped.
You already have H1 bulbs and no matter what you buy, they will not compare to HIDS.
The loom is to do with the High beam HIDS, iirc it needs another earth.
