Im guessing this is the same setup as the mk4 golfs.

I just fitted my front coilovers today on a mk4 golf (no spreader tool)
I used this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/snap-on-socke...tZUK_Hand_Tools_Equipment?hash=item1c11ba082e

It was either 6 or 7mm, Hammer in, it fits a treat then put the wrench on it and slightly twist (Held fine)
Grab the shock an twist left to right and it should move slighty if you have done it correctly, thens its just a matter of loads of wd40 and patience.
(Make sure the shock is loose from the top, when seeing if you can twist it)

This is going by the bases it is the same as the golf.

I have the hub spreader tool you need mate, if you can be arsed driving to leeds to pick it up and again to drop it off then you're more than welcome to lend it!

It only cost me £14 like, went to a VW spares place and they had one in stock.

thanks alot mate

ill have another attempt using chisel and stuff with what people have said but if i cnt then ill come over and get it mate

thanks alot

ive just ordered some coilovers from dpm and the fronts are sounding a bit tough! It best to pass this job over to someone who knows what they're doing and pay out?

To be honest christoff, it's really not as bad as people make out. Sure, there are particular quirks, such as the spreader tool and one side needing the springs compressing because the driveshaft gets in the way. But I've seen much worse set ups. My old Astra used gas cartridges for the front, fixed behind a 60mm (six-zero) hex nut that needed mega torques to get open. There's no way I was getting that open without major tools!

At least have a go, then if you don't manage it then get it to the garage.

hub spreader tool is VW tool 3424 and is around £10 + vat if I remember when I bought mine. Can be done with a chisel but for £10 is it worth not getting the tool and fu**ing something up?

Also its the same for most VAG cars so well its easy to sell on or might be needed.

hi if you have a ratchet screwdriver that has inserts (the cheap type that most people have) for different size screws(philps and flat) then you can use a flat head about 8mm then just put it in an adjustable spanner push into the hub and turn 45 degrees this will spread the hub 8mm and use wd40 as soon as u take the wheel off this is what i have done with great success (this afternoon again lol) cheaper than a tenner!! hope this helps
