Ibiza 1.4 Responsiveness question

Hey , ive got a 1.4 sport 03 reg and i have the same problem (slow response) i just assumed it was the way it is! glad some1 posted thought i was the only 1!!

So is there anything other than changing the air filter and maybe getting a remap to increase performance of a 1.4 sport?
Or is it limited due to the small engine?

There is all sorts you can do but on a cost benefit basis unless you are planning on racing it in a 1400cc class then you would be better saving up for something quicker as standard. (Insurance on a modified hatch will quickly catch up to that of a quicker but standard model as well).

might just be they adjusted how sensitive the switch is or something?

hey I just got a 05 1.4 Sport too and i can vouch for this ... hard to describe hesitation i think. Alo there seems to be a fla spot from 2 to 3k RPM, after 3 to 4k its goes nicely, this happens even with my foot planted to the floor. My last car was a Hyundai Accent 1.3 so performance wise on paper is very similar, the ibiza has more torque but the accent is about 200kg lighter. But i must say the accent is way more responsive and feels nippier, even more so when i dropped a K&N filter on it too. I can only hope some light mod and a green filter will do the same with me ibiza now.

I'm having trouble beleiving that, I know you said (FEELS) but the 1.2 is somthing like 55ps and the 1.4 is 100ps, that's almost double the power in my (real world)

its only 100ps for the later versions i believe, mine's only the 70something. Also i've driven a Polo E with the 1.2 and dispite the rattly/buzzy noise i think the 3 pot seems more lively too.

I've been driving mine only a few days, and inital lift off from a stand still is poor, I cant for example slip in a slot at a busy roundabout. I need to do with at least 3 times on my commute to work and i either stall, or roll out of the junction. Its like the computer is saying "NO, i'm going to feather you the air/fuel mixture" rather than "100% thottle open NOW!" This is now past embarrising to positively dangerous. I'd be the first to admit my driving skill isnt high and probably i just need to get used to the car but i'm hoping somehow i can rectify this.

Clean/replace air filter, clean throttle body, injector cleaner...These could help as if the flow rate of one is low, the other will be restricted and you will notice that on initial throttle. Spark plugs is another option. But I have only driven a 1.4 75bhp once...don't remember it being paticularly unresponsive tho

However, my comments were in relation to the 75PS 1.4 vs the 64PS 1.2 that was available at the same time as these are the two versions I have experience of

I noticed this when test-driving a 1.4 a few years ago. From a halt, the 1.2 certainly seemed punchier and more responsive (where as the 1.4 worried me a few times at roundabouts when I was expecting it to go...) but it's one of those things to get used to. I believe both are drive-by-wire, but the engine designs are obviously quite different (is the 1.2 newer?). While 1.2 has a lot in the low-end (great for city driving), I believe the 1.4 has better power delivery around 60-ish (where my 1.2 has a "dull" zone, although it seems alright at 70 onwards; however I didn't really notice this on a the test-drive).

Besides, three cylinders at 5000rpm just sounds better.

OK Humble pie time then, I didn't know that the new 1.2 was 70ps and the old 1.4 was 75ps.

So potentially only 5ps in it and the 1.2 being a lighter block

In first the 1.2 could pull on the 1.4 if both were rolling along in 1st gear with cluth engaged and no throttle. However once in 2nd and 3rd the 1.4 will pull away on the 1.2.
