As I understand it, the FR tdi is insurance group 8 whereas the Cupra is group 16. Is this correct?

You can see that sort of power quite easily with what is effectively the same engine.
The PD130 of the FR will map to around 175-180bhp, whereas the Cupra will map to around 200bhp, so there is slightly more potential.

The Cupra is obviously the slightly better car, but I could not justify the difference in price and particularly the massive difference in insurance groups.

The insurance groups are very different - but if you modded an FR up to standard Cupra spec, would there would be a huge difference - if any - between the cost of insuring the heavily modded FR and a standard Cupra ?

And having had ESP on my last Mk4, it's an option I personally would not want to be without, IMHO it's a lifesaver and you can't get that on the FR, just TCS.

Fair dos, Muddy boots. I would still feel that mapping an FR to 160bhp would be cheaper to insure than a group 15/16 car. Has anyone on here got experience of the 'hike' in premium for such a mod?

i am sure that the fr can see the same power as the cupra, just requires the right parts such as a fmic as opposed to an smic as standard

Well you could replace every part to be the same as a cupra so yeah, but it would probably cost more than buying a cupra in the first place.

true but as said the cupra is a big jump in performance for little power gain

yes a package the cupra has more potential when remapped, but both cars are limited with the same clutch as far as i am aware

Theres a lot of messing about in trying to get a FR to Cupra spec, it costs more money, will cost more on insurance and will have a poor resale value as no normal person will buy a modded car.

If you can get one for £13k, go for it! Mine was £14200 new, with metallic and a load of accessories thrown in.

i agree, however i am guessing there are a lot of people in my situation

insurance on the cupra is just not a viable option as its too steep, fr is much more affordable and power wise can be got to cupra speeds easily

I was deciding fr or cupra and i went for FR because its cheaper to buy and cheaper to insure to start with and the rest you can just buy as you go along, but if anyone is thinking of going big turbo i would reccomend the fr anyway, but the cupra's will hold their value better but if your like me and spend loads of money on the car you aren't the kind of person that is planning on selling it in a couple of years my car will be on my drive long after the engine stops working its my pride and joy. all you need to buy to beat a standard cupra in an fr is a re-map yes the cupra has bigger better brakes and even if you upgrade to 312mm's the cupra's are still better but the 312mm's are still capable enough to stop you, its when you start looking at the details when it starts to get a bit expensive i.e front bumper, spoiler, interior, Alloys and headlining when you start buying these like i have done it almost gets to the point where i may aswell have just bought a cupra but i'm still pleased i went for the fr as my finance and insurence is lower than if i had gone for a cupra!!! i just spend my spare cash on the car!!

I too was having to think long and hard about getting the CUPRA or FR, for me the insurance was not a problem (36 with full ncb)

what swung me was the ride and comfort of the CUPRA or lack of it, I am too old for go-cart ride quality and too fat for the CUPRA seats

my teeth are dodgy and my back is on it's way out

my insurance wasnt that bad tbh.. im 21, live in suburbs of bristol, ONLY 1yr ncb.. Paid £800 for renewal on my 1.4 at start of march, and then an extra £400 for Cupra 20VT the remaining 8months of insurance, so ive paid £1200 total insurance this year for a group 15 car.

Why would you want to do all this? Imo FR wheels are better looking than Cupras. Front of FR looks more modern than Cupras. £200 remap on FR and bobs yer uncle.

what does everyone think the impact will have on used car prices of the Cupra?

I am still looking at the Cupra but think the FR is going to be a more viable option.

i got a insurance quote (3 years NCB, 21 in MK)
Cupra £850 (260 Excess)
FR £700 (260 Excess)

For me i think £150 isn't too much to go for the Cupra, but i still can't seem to find the right one.
