You need the washer units to keep the lights clean. If the lights are not clean, the light beam could end up beeing out of place. You will also need a self leveling system for the light units. These are all a factory fit on modles with these types of lights.

so does the law mean that normal lights dont need to be clean?! Or is that becuase when the lenses are dirty, the beam is just dulled rather than beamed elsewhere on the road?

It is because dirt of flies etc disform the beam of the xenon light, giving a higher posibility of blinding someone with light.

ok fair enough, they all seem pretty blinding anyway... well did, before tinted all my windows lol :-D

To be 100% legal, HID headlights need to be auto-levelling and have headlamp washers.

However many people have fitted aftermarket kits and not bothered with either and don't seem to have had a problem, so long as the headlights are correctly aligned.

To fit the washers you would need (at a minimum):
1) New bumper
2) 2 x washer units
3) Pipework and brackets etc
4) Bigger washer fluid tank

I was talking about the kit from SEAT.
